Speaker Johnson Outlines GOP Agenda: Tax Cuts, Smaller Government

Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled the Republican agenda on Tuesday, outlining key priorities if the GOP maintains its House majority after the next election. Speaking at the New York Stock Exchange, Johnson emphasized extending Trump-era tax cuts, downsizing the federal workforce, expanding school choice, and boosting domestic energy production. He also emphasized the need to confront China on trade and global influence.

Johnson's speech highlighted five core policy goals: tax reform, curbing federal regulations, strengthening energy independence, bolstering education options for parents, and reducing the size of the federal government. "The survival of the American dream depends upon our victory," Johnson declared, stressing the importance of a Republican win in both the House and Senate to enact these policies.

While addressing Wall Street investors and traders, Johnson painted a grim picture of the economy under President Joe Biden, despite economic growth, lower inflation, and historically low unemployment. He shared stories of business owners struggling with high inflation and families turning to plasma donations and crowdfunding to make ends meet. Johnson argued that excessive taxation and regulation were hindering economic prosperity.

His first priority was tax reform, advocating for enhanced tax breaks, including immediate expensing of research and development costs and a strong child tax credit. He avoided specifics but aligned his vision with Trump's proposed tax cuts, including extending provisions from the 2017 tax overhaul. While Trump's tax plans aim to lower taxes on tips and Social Security, experts warn that both Trump's and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris's tax proposals could significantly increase the national debt.

On education, Johnson called for expanding school choice, ensuring all parents have the freedom to choose the best educational path for their children. He also stressed the need for environmental deregulation and a focus on reducing the federal workforce, aiming to eliminate non-essential jobs and cut government debt. "It's hard to roll back the entrenched bureaucracy," Johnson admitted, but he remained optimistic about the possibility of achieving these reforms.

With Republicans holding a slim majority in the House, Johnson and his colleagues are preparing for a tough election season. The GOP hopes that a Trump victory over Kamala Harris will help them secure both the House and Senate, enabling them to push through their legislative agenda and regain full control of Washington for the first time since 2018.
