Ryan Routh Pleads Not Guilty in Second Trump Assassination Attempt

Ryan Routh, 58, pleaded not guilty Monday to charges related to a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump earlier this month. Appearing in a Florida courtroom, Routh faced five federal charges and confirmed to Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart that he understood them, with his legal team entering the plea on his behalf.

Initially charged with firearm possession as a convicted felon and possessing a gun without a serial number, Routh was arrested on September 15 at Trump International Golf Club after Secret Service agents found him near the course. Prosecutors allege Routh had been planning to assassinate Trump, compiling a list of venues where the former president was scheduled to appear during his 2024 campaign.

Routh was later indicted on additional charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm in connection with a violent crime, and assaulting a federal officer. According to authorities, Routh was discovered with an SKS-style rifle near the golf course, and after a brief altercation, he fled but was arrested on a nearby highway. Trump was unharmed in the incident and quickly escorted to safety.

The government contends that Routh's sole purpose in West Palm Beach was to assassinate Trump. This marks the second assassination attempt against Trump, following a July 13 incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman wounded Trump in the ear during a rally, resulting in one fatality and several injuries among attendees.

In response to these attacks, Congress recently passed the Enhanced Presidential Security Act, which ensures equal Secret Service protection for all major party candidates. The bill now awaits President Biden's signature.
