Kari Lake Triumphs at Arizona GOP Senate Primary
Republican Kari Lake has secured the Arizona GOP U.S. Senate primary, setting up a November showdown with Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego. Lake, a former Phoenix TV news anchor who previously ran for governor in 2022, earned 55.4% of the vote, defeating Mark Lamb and Elizabeth Jean Rya. She gained significant support from former President Donald Trump, who endorsed her candidacy.
Following her victory, Lake praised Trump, calling him "bulletproof" and expressing gratitude for his support. Republican National Committee Chairman Steve Daines also congratulated Lake, urging Arizonans to rally against Gallego in the upcoming election. Daines highlighted Lake's commitment to working with Trump on issues like border security, crime control, and reducing prices.
Gallego responded by inviting Arizonans from all political backgrounds to join his campaign to defeat Lake, criticizing her stance on abortion and other policies he deems harmful. He emphasized his goals to defend abortion rights, reduce costs for families, protect water resources, and support veterans.
Lake has a controversial history, having falsely claimed fraud in her 2022 gubernatorial election loss to Democrat Katie Hobbs. Her legal team was fined by Arizona's Supreme Court for making repeated false statements about the election, including unfounded claims of added ballots. The U.S. Supreme Court also declined to hear her case alleging vulnerabilities in electronic voting machines, leaving a lower court's dismissal of her claims in place.
Additionally, Maricopa County's top election official, Republican Stephen Richer, has sued Lake for defamation, accusing her of spreading false allegations that he sabotaged her gubernatorial campaign.
Arizona remains a critical battleground state, with its U.S. Senate race being one of the pivotal contests that could determine the Senate's balance of power. The Cook Political Report lists Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin Senate races as leaning Democratic, while Michigan, Montana, Nevada, and Ohio are currently considered toss-ups.
