Speaker Mike Johnson Confident in Votes for Biden Impeachment Inquiry
Speaker Mike Johnson indicated on Saturday that House Republicans are prepared to launch a formal impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, asserting that it's a necessary step.
During a Fox News appearance alongside Rep. Elise Stefanik, Johnson, R-La., highlighted their prior roles defending Donald Trump in impeachment proceedings, emphasizing the distinction in this instance. "Remember, we are the rule-of-law team. We have to do it very methodically," he stated.
Johnson accused the White House of obstructing GOP-led House committees by withholding witnesses and evidence. "They're preventing at least two to three [Department of Justice] witnesses from coming forward," he alleged, adding that a formal impeachment inquiry vote would propel the process forward.
Expressing confidence in obtaining enough votes for the inquiry, Johnson underscored that bipartisan support isn't expected for the move.
The White House, labeling House Republicans' efforts as "illegitimate," didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
Meanwhile, House Republicans signaled plans for a vote next week to authorize the impeachment inquiry. Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., confirmed this intention, and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., called for swift action on the matter.
Comer suggested that Republican backing for the inquiry solidified during the Thanksgiving break, citing public demand for clarity regarding Joe Biden's alleged involvement in family business matters.
Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced in September the initiation of a Biden impeachment inquiry, directing committees to gather bank records and other documents. Last month, House Republicans issued subpoenas to Hunter Biden, James Biden, and a Biden family associate, aiming to investigate alleged financial irregularities involving over 20 shell companies linked to the Biden family.
White House counsel Richard Sauber criticized these subpoenas as "unjustified," arguing that extensive investigations have refuted baseless claims against the President.
