Influential Presidential Adviser Henry Kissinger Passes Away at Age 100
Henry Kissinger, an influential diplomat who fled Nazi Germany as a teenager and later became a key figure in U.S. diplomacy, has passed away at 100.
Kissinger died at his Connecticut home on Wednesday, as confirmed by his consulting firm.
Serving as U.S. Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977 under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, Kissinger was also their national security adviser.
Born Heinz Alfred Kissinger on May 27, 1923, in Fürth, Germany, he spent his early years enduring Nazi rule. Fleeing Germany in 1938 due to escalating racial segregation, his family settled in New York City.
In the U.S., his name changed to Henry, and he juggled factory work with night school, eventually studying at City College of New York for accounting. World War II interrupted his education after he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in intelligence and attaining the rank of sergeant. His German proficiency led to service in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge.
Upon leaving the Army in 1946 with a Bronze Star, he became a naturalized citizen and resumed studies at Harvard University, earning degrees in political science.
Beginning his career as a faculty member at Harvard, he focused on national security, foreign policy, and nuclear weapons. In the 1960s, he advised Nelson Rockefeller in multiple presidential bids before Nixon appointed him as national security adviser in 1969.
During his tenure, Kissinger played pivotal roles in establishing relations with China and the Soviet Union. He facilitated the end of the Yom Kippur War and negotiated the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.
Throughout his life, Kissinger authored 21 books, including "On China," "Diplomacy," "White House Years," and "World Order."
Survived by his wife, Nancy Maginnes Kissinger, and children Elizabeth and David, Kissinger's memorial service is slated for a future date in New York City, followed by a private family interment.
