Keanu Reeves honors Lance Reddick at 'John Wick: Chapter 4' premiere

Keanu Reeves is remembering late friend and co-star Lance Reddick.

Reeves, 58, and the John Wick: Chapter 4 cast paid tribute to Reddick at the film's Los Angeles premiere Monday.

Reddick played the hotel concierge Charon in all four of the John Wick films, and was to reprise the role in the upcoming spinoff Ballerina. The actor died suddenly Friday at age 60.

Reeves and the John Wick cast honored Reddick at the premiere by wearing blue ribbon pins and reflecting on his life and legacy. The screening opened with a standing ovation for Reddick.

"Lance is a very beautiful person and special artist," Reeves told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet. "His grace and dignity, his shining light of character was just something really special."

"[I am] really grateful I had the chance to know him and work with him over almost 10 years," he added.

Reeves shared similar sentiments with The Hollywood Reporter.

"Every time you were in his presence, he was such a special person, special artist, and he had a grace and dignity, and a passion for life and his craft," he said of Reddick. "Just to be in his light and to be in his presence and get a chance to work with him, every day was special."

Cast member Laurence Fishburne also mourned Reddick.

"We love Lance, we miss Lance. He's the heart of these movies in many ways," Fishburne told THR.

"We lost our brother. But we made a beautiful movie, it's the best of all of them, and I think people are going to love it and that's what it's about, right? He wouldn't want us to not do this."

John Wick: Chapter 4 is dedicated in Reddick's honor. The film is written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch and directed by Chad Stahelski, and also stars Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Rina Sawayama and Ian McShane. The movie opens in theaters Friday.

On Tuesday, the Ivy League school named Hanks, 66, as the principal speaker for its Class of 2023 commencement.

Harvard's 372nd commencement ceremony will take place May 25.

"A true master of his craft, Tom Hanks has given life to some of the most compelling, beloved, and iconic characters on the screen," Harvard president Larry Bacow said in a statement. He has contributed to our national culture and expanded our ability to appreciate stories and histories that have been previously unexamined. I very much look forward to his address in May."

Recent Harvard commencement speakers include former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, and director Steven Spielberg.

'Smash' musical with Steven Spielberg coming to Broadway

Smash is being adapted as a Broadway musical.

The new stage musical is based on the NBC series of the same name, which aired for two seasons from 2012 to 2013.

Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron, who produced the TV series, announced the project Wednesday. The trio will serve as lead producers on the Broadway adaptation.

Susan Stroman (The Producers) will direct the musical, which features a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote songs for the original show. The show is expected to debut during the 2024-2025 season.

The Smash series starred Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Katharine McPhee, Christian Borle and Megan Hilty as members of a New York theater company. The show followed the group as they put on Broadway musicals.

"Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it was always my hope that a musical inspired by the show would eventually come to the stage. We now have an incredible creative team, and I'm looking forward to completing the Smash journey which began with my producing partners over ten years ago," Spielberg said in a statement.

"Ever since the show ended in 2012, not a week goes by that someone doesn't ask us when they will see Smash as a musical. We think we've come up with something the die-hard series fans will love but that will also be exciting for people who never saw an episode of the show. Above all else it will be a valentine to the Broadway musical and the exhilarating rollercoaster ride of bringing one to life," Meron added.

The Broadway adaptation will also see the characters prepare to put on the musical Bombshell but will "depart liberally from the series."
