August 05, 2022

Greetings fellow Bizarros:

International Beer Day, celebrated annually on the first Friday in August, was started by a California man and some friends in 2008.

The holiday was originally celebrated each Aug. 5, but was switched in 2013 to make sure the holiday always fell on a Friday.

International Beer Day was founded in 2008 by Jesse Avshalomov and some friends in Santa Cruz, Calif. Avshalomov said he and his co-founders spread the holiday's popularity by contacting local bars. The holiday gradually increased in popularity across southern California and spread worldwide via the Internet.

The official website for the holiday states its purposes are threefold: "To gather with friends and enjoy the deliciousness that is beer, to celebrate the dedicated men and women who brew and serve our beer [and] to bring the world together by celebrating the beers of all nations and cultures on this one remarkable day."

Other holidays and observances for Aug. 5, 2022, include Braham Pie Day, Green Peppers Day, International Albarino Day, International Traffic Light Day, National Oyster Day, National Underwear Day, National Water Balloon Day, Tomboy Tools Day and Work Like a Dog Day.

Firefighters remove bear from laundry room

Firefighters in California responded to a home to remove a bear that had broken into the house and damaged a pipe in the laundry room to take a drink. Santa Barbara County Fire spokesman Scott Safechuck said on Twitter that firefighters were summoned to a Cuyama Valley home on Wednesday on a report of an intruding bear. Safechuck said firefighters arrived to find the bear "relaxing" in the laundry room. He said the bear had broken a water pipe in the room and was enjoying a drink. Firefighters escorted the bear outside the house and the animal "immediately climbed a tree," Safechuck tweeted.

Giant turkey roast on Florida highway

Firefighters in Florida said no one was injured, but several dinners were ruined, when a truck carrying 10,000 frozen turkeys caught fire on the highway. The Seminole County Fire Department said the driver of the tractor-trailer pulled over to the side of Interstate 4 in the Sanford area when the trailer caught fire about 4:40 a.m. The department said the truck had been carrying a load of 10,000 frozen turkeys. A photo tweeted by the department shows some of the scorched birds in the back of the truck. Firefighters said the flames were extinguished, but had to be put out a second time when the fire sparked back up. The cause of the fire was unknown. No injuries were reported.
