Music producer Phil Spector dies while incarcerated

Famed music producer Phil Spector, whose legacy was marred by his conviction in the 2003 murder of actress and club hostess Lana Clarkson, has died.

Spector was "pronounced deceased of natural causes at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at an outside hospital. His official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner in the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office," the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement Sunday.

The prison said he was 80 but Variety and TMZ reported his age as 81, born on Dec. 26, 1939.

"Before his incarceration, Spector was an influential record producer, musician and songwriter best known for developing a music production technique called the 'wall of sound,'' the prison said in the release.

TMZ said he died from COVID-related complications four weeks after he was diagnosed.

Spector was found guilty of second-degree murder by a Los Angeles jury after his second trial in 2009. He was sentenced to 19 years-to-life in prison.

The producer's first trial ended in a hung jury and was declared a mistrial in 2007.

Spector's lawyers argued Clarkson could have killed herself at Spector's home.

Among the hit songs Spector produced in the 1960s and '70s were "To Know Him is To Love Him" by the Teddy Bears, The Righteous Brothers' "You Lost that Lovin' Feeling," "Unchained Melody," "You're My Soul and Inspiration," The Ronettes' "Be My Baby," The Crystals' "He's a Rebel" and Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High."

Spector also produced The Beatles' final album, "Let It Be," and John Lennon's solo songs "Instant Karma" and "Imagine."

The Grammy winner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Al Pacino played him in the 2013 movie, Phil Spector.

"He's awesome and he's so cute," Timberlake said of his baby boy after DeGeneres prodded him for details. "Nobody is sleeping, but we are thrilled."

The couple had not publicly announced they were expecting or had welcomed a child before this confirmation.

The singer did not say exactly when Phineas was born.

Timberlake, 39, and Biel, 38, have been married since 2012. They are also the parents of a 5-year-old son named Silas.

Anthony Mackie says Chris Evans, Paul Rudd are biggest trash talkers

Anthony Mackie said Chris Evans and Paul Rudd are the biggest trash talkers from the Avengers when it comes to fantasy football, while speaking with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.

On Thursday, Mackie detailed the fantasy football league he competes in with other Avengers stars. The actor recently finished second to last with Chris Pratt winning the season.

"It's a split. I mean Chris Evans talks a lot of trash. Paul Rudd talks intellectual trash, which is confusing because you don't know if he's insulting you, but you feel like it's a diss somewhere in there," Mackie said when asked who the biggest trash talker is.

"So he's the guy you want to fight. You know, you can talk back to Chris, but Paul it's like nah," Mackie continued, before joking about having to Google the words in Rudd's insults.

Mackie and Fallon also played a few rounds of Hey Robot, a password-like game where the pair took turns asking a smart speaker questions in an attempt to get it to say a random word.

Fallon won the game after successfully getting the smart speaker to say rectangle and zombie.

Mackie next stars in sci-fi action film Outside the Wire as an android super solider. The film comes to Netflix on Friday.
