HBO Max confirms 'Friends' reunion special, cast returning
HBO Max confirmed Friday that a Friends reunion special is officially happening, with original cast members Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer participating.
Aniston fueled rumors of a reunion when she posed for a selfie with her five Friends co-stars. Later, on an appearance on Ellen on Oct. 28, she told Ellen Degeneres and singer Charlie Puth, "We would love for there to be something, but we don't know what that something is. We're working on something."
HBO Max Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly has been trying to secure the special. He told the Television Critics Association on Jan. 15 that it was still a "maybe." On Friday, HBO Max confirmed the special in a news release.
The six original Friends will reunite on Stage 24 on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, Calif., where the original NBC series filmed for 10 seasons. The special will be available at the launch of HBO Max in May.
HBO Max will also become the streaming home for all 10 seasons of Friends. The episodes were previously on Netflix. TBS currently broadcasts reruns on TV and streams them on the TBS app.
"Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together," Reilly said in the news release. He was making a reference to the naming of every Friends episode whose titles began either "The One With..." or "The One Where..."
Creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane return as executive producers, along with Kevin Bright and Ben Winston as EPs. Winston will direct the special.
Friends began in 1994 and anchored NBC's Thursday night comedy lineup for 10 years. Rachel (Aniston), Monica (Cox), Phoebe (Kudrow), Joey (LeBlanc), Chandler (Perry) and Ross (Schwimmer) lived in New York apartments across the hall from each other and gathered at the coffee shop Central Perk.
Ross and Rachel were a series-long will they/won't they. Chandler and Monica ended up married by the show's end. Phoebe was a singer with fan-favorite tunes like "Smelly Cat." And a Joey spinoff ran two years after Friends ended.

Dr. Phil McGraw gets star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Television personality, psychologist, producer and author Dr. Phil McGraw was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He has hosted the syndicated Dr. Phil program since 2002 and plans to continue doing so through at least 2023.
McGraw, 69, is also a producer on the CBS drama Bull, which is now in its fourth season, and the syndicated medical talk show The Doctors, which is now in its 12th season.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry, singer-songwriter Ronnie Dunn and McGraw's family helped him celebrate the Walk of Fame star dedication in which he declared he was "happier than a rabbit in a carrot patch."
He went on to say he frequently reminds his adult sons, who are also in the entertainment industry: "We are so blessed to live such wonderful lives. It's lots of hard work, it truly is, but, really, it is pretty damn glamorous and exciting, I have to say. I always say to them: 'Stop, take a breath, look around, soak it up. Don't miss the journey.'"
He told Variety he hopes Dr. Phil offers "common-sense, usable information that's delivered to people in their homes every day for free."
"We want to move mental health, mental illness, to the forefront of the narrative in America and make it OK to talk about. We want to take the stigma away from mental illness."

The 33-year-old actress shared a video with her fiancé, Paul Michael, on Thursday after announcing their engagement last week.
The clip shows Bynes praising Michael as they stand side by side.
"Hey, everyone. This is Paul, my fiancé. I'm so lucky. As you can see, he's drop-dead gorgeous. He's also the best person on the face of the Earth."
Bynes also apologized for her past comments on Twitter.
"I just wanted to post a video to say I'm sorry to everyone whom I called ugly on Twitter. I was feeling so ugly at the time, and it was really hard for me to express myself at the time because I was so drugged out," the actress said, referencing her past substance abuse issues.
"Now I've remained sober for over a year. Same with Paul," she added. "I just want to let you know that I love you guys and I'm so happy now. I feel like I got what is mine, and that is Paul."
Bynes shared a pair of selfies with Michael earlier in the day on Instagram.
"Myloveispaul," she wrote.
Bynes had announced her engagement alongside a photo of her engagement ring Feb. 14 on Valentine's Day.
"Engaged to tha love of my life," she captioned the post.
Sources said Bynes and Michael met in rehab and have been dating a few months. Bynes has reportedly been living in a sober house since graduating from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in June.

??? Guess Who ???
Which star discussed a possible sequel to the 2003 romantic comedy, 'Love Actually'?
Love Actually star Liam Neeson thinks the 2003 movie is a "beautiful" film.
The 67-year-old actor discussed the beloved Christmas movie and the possibility of a sequel during Thursday's episode of Watch What Happens Live.
Neeson, the Love Actually cast and writer-director Richard Curtis previously reunited for a short film for Red Nose Day that gave an update on the characters.
When asked about a possible sequel on WWHL, Neeson deferred the question to Curtis.
"I think that's one you'd have to ask Richard Curtis, the writer and director," he said.
Neeson said he doesn't watch Love Actually if he happens to see it on TV, but had nothing but praise for the film.
"Not because I don't like it. I think it's a beautiful film," the actor said. "I really do, not least because the opening of that film."
"You see all these people coming out ... And you hear Hugh Grant saying the messages from the Twin Towers -- were assassinated, bombed -- all the messages were about love. You're immediately gripped. I defy anybody not to listen to that and think, 'I want to watch more of this.'"
Laura Linney, who played Sarah in Love Actually, shut down sequel rumors during a previous appearance on WWHL.
"I doubt it. I'd be surprised. But you never know," the actress said.
On WWHL, Neeson and fellow guest Lesley Manville also played a game of Britannic-Huh? where host Andy Cohen tried to identify real British slang words.
Neeson will next star in the crime thriller Honest Thief.
