Reports: 'Days of Our Lives' stars released from contracts amid renewal talks

The stars of NBC's long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives have been released from their contracts and the show is scheduled to go on indefinite hiatus at the end of this month.

Variety, Deadline and TVLine reported the news, but the network has not publicly commented on it.

Sony Pictures Television and NBC are in negotiations to renew series, which recently marked the broadcast of its 13,000th episode.

The show films eight months in advance. If it doesn't get renewed for a 56th season, there will still be enough pre-recorded episodes to keep it on the air through next summer.

Cast members from the daily drama took to social media to say the show has not been canceled.

"We're still here #; )" Kristian Alfonso wrote on Instagram. "#xo #days @carlivatiron @nbc #kindness lots of #love."

Chandler Massey tweeted: "We're not being cancelled. We are pausing production because we are so far ahead of schedule (and it saves us $). Days will still air during the entire hiatus, so you won't miss anything!"

Camila Banus posted a video on Twitter, denouncing cancellation speculation as "B.S." and explaining: "I have not been fired from Days of Our Lives. That is ridiculous. None of my co-stars have been fired from the show."

John Legend is People's 2019 Sexiest Man Alive

Singer, producer and television personality John Legend has been named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2019.

"I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it's a lot of pressure," Legend told the publication. "Everyone's going to be picking me apart to see if I'm sexy enough to hold this title. I'm [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!"

Legend, 40, is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award winner. He is married to TV star Chrissy Teigen and the father of two children. He is also a coach on The Voice.

2008 Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman took to Twitter to tease Legend about the honor.

"Dear John. Massive congrats on joining this prestigious group. 99% of the time People get it right. ie Blake, DJ. A a word of caution. There's the 1%. It's important you fall in w the right crowd. Enjoy your reign. HJ, @people @VancityReynolds @johnlegend @blakeshelton @TheRock," Jackman tweeted along with a short video of him showing Ryan Reynolds his People's Sexiest Man Alive cover.

Reynolds won the title in 2010.

Disney Plus subscribers face technical errors on launch day

Streamers waiting to see Disney Plus movies and shows on Tuesday's launch faced technical errors.

Thousands of subscribers saw error messages after logging in, and Walt Disney Company blamed oversize demand as it tapped into the streaming market with established players such as Netflix and Amazon.

"The demand for #DisneyPlus has exceeded our highest expectations," Disney Plus said in a Twitter post Tuesday morning. "We are pleased you're excited to watch all your favorites and are working quickly to resolve any current user issues. We appreciate your patience."

Downdetector.com reported a peak of 8,391 Disney Plus subscribers affected by the outage around 9 a.m. By 2 p.m., the online technical glitches monitor reported 769 outages left.

The service launched Tuesday in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands with nearly 500 films and 7,500 television episodes, Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International Media Center announced. It includes Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel movies content, along with National Geographic. Original content includes Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian, and a live action Lady and the Tramp.

The subscription-based streaming service costs $6.99 a month, or $69.99 per year. Subscribers can bundle Disney Plus with Hulu and ESPN Plus for $12.99 per month, and Verizon wireless and new FiOS customers can get the streaming service free for a year.

Wall Street analysts appeared confident that the Disney Plus errors would be resolved as shares traded at about $139, up 2 percent from the prior day.

The company announced that Disney Plus will also launch next Tuesday in Australia, New Zealand and U.S. territory Puerto Rico. On March 31, 2020, Disney Plus will launch in markets across Western Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, as announced earlier this month.

Robert De Niro to receive SAG Life Achievement honor

The Irishman and Goodfellas icon Robert De Niro has been chosen to receive the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award this winter.

"Robert De Niro is an actor of extraordinary depth and ability. The characters he creates captivate our imaginations. From the smoldering inferno of young Vito Corleone to the raging bull Jake LaMotta and everybody's grandpa Ben Whittaker, he continues to touch our hearts and open our minds to new and exciting worlds of understanding and emotion," Gabrielle Carteris, president of SAG-AFTRA, said in a statement on Tuesday. "It is my great privilege to announce that SAG-AFTRA's highest honor will be presented to one of the most singular talents of our generation, Robert De Niro."

De Niro, 76, is a two-time Oscar winner whose credits include Joker, Meet the Parents, Awakenings, The Untouchables, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull and The Godfather Part II.

"I have been a member of this union for over 50 years. It's an honor to receive this award from SAG-AFTRA," De Niro said.

The SAG Awards ceremony -- honoring excellence in film and television -- is scheduled to be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Jan. 19.

The Irishman is now in theaters. It is set to debut on Netflix on Nov. 27.

Which actress says Burt Reynolds was worst kisser?

Kathleen Turner says former co-star Burt Reynolds "sucked" at kissing.

The 65-year-old actress named Reynolds, who died in September 2018, as her worst onscreen kiss during Tuesday's episode of Watch What Happens Live.

Turner and Reynolds played Christy Colleran and John L. "Sully" Sullivan IV in the 1988 movie Switching Channels. Turner previously named William Hurt as her best onscreen kiss, but did not have praise for Reynolds.

"He sucked," Turner said of Reynolds. "I had rehearsed with Michael Caine. I was supposed to do the film with Michael Caine -- good choice, right? Well, Michael Caine got caught on Jaws 4, the shark kept breaking down."

"I was pregnant and had a stop date, but [Caine] did not. So we shot everything we could without him and then finally, the producer went and hired Burt what's-his-face," she added.

Reynolds had named Turner as the most overrated actress of the 1970s and '80s during an episode of WWHL in March 2018. Turner said in an interview with Vulture in August 2018 that working with Reynolds was a "terrible" experience.

"The first day Burt came in he made me cry. He said something about not taking second place to a woman," Turner said of her top billing in Switching Channels. "His behavior was shocking. It never occurred to me that I wasn't someone's equal. I left the room sobbing."

"I called my husband said, 'I don't know what to do.' He said, 'You just do the job,'" she shared. "It got to be very hostile because the crew began taking sides. But as for the performance, I was able to put the negativity aside. I'm not convinced Burt was."

On WWHL, Turner also discussed her role as Chandler Bing's (Matthew Perry) father on the NBC sitcom Friends.

"One of the co-creators of Friends -- I was doing a one-woman show based on Tallulah Bankhead and he came up to see the show in San Francisco. Came backstage and said, 'You have to play Chandler's dad," Turner recalled. "I thought, 'Okay, let me think now. A woman playing a man playing a woman, right? I haven't done that.' So I said yes."
