Rip Taylor, campy comic and game show personality, dies at 84

Rip Taylor, the campy comedian and actor known for throwing confetti, wearing flamboyant outfits and crying for laughs, died Sunday, his publicist Harlan Boll said. He was 84.

Boll said Taylor died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, after being hospitalized last week following a seizure.

Born as Charles Elmer Taylor Jr., the TV game show guest and comedy circuit prop-comic mainstay got his start in entertaining while serving in the Korean War, Boll said.

His first of many TV spots came in 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show, during which he acquired the nickname of "The Crying Comedian."

In 2011, he told Lifestyle Magazine TV that his iconic bit started when he was called on to the stage and the eponymous host, Ed Sullivan, forgot his name.

"He forgot my name. He couldn't read the cue card and I pulled a hair from my nose and tears came down and they pushed me on and he says, 'The Crying Comedian' and that's how that happened," Taylor said.

Throughout the 1970s, he became a household name for his schtick of dousing contestants on Hollywood Squares, The Gong Show and The Match Game in heaps of confetti.

"The greatest joy Rip had in life was from the result of making others laugh. He didn't have an easy childhood. Abused and bullied, he said he discovered early that they weren't hitting you if they were laughing," Boll said.

Tim Long, a longtime writer on The Simpsons, said on Twitter that Taylor was kind and hilarious, but also "a brave spokesperson for survivors of abuse."

Actress and comedian Sandra Bernhard said one of her first TV appearances was as a contestant on the game show The $1.98 Beauty Show, which Taylor presented.

"He was one of a kind, madcap, unapologetic and damn funny," she said. "They don't make 'em like that anymore."

Later in his career, Taylor was known for playing himself in Wayne's World 2 and The Simpsons, as well as in several other movies and TV shows.

He is survived by his longtime partner, Robert Fortney.

Adam Levine is 'stay-at-home dad' after 'The Voice' departure

Adam Levine says he's been a stay-at-home dad since his departure from The Voice.

The 40-year-old singer discussed The Voice and spending time with Dusty Rose and Gio Grace, his daughters with wife Behati Prinsloo, during Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Levine confirmed his exit from The Voice in May after serving as a judge on the NBC reality competition for 16 seasons. He told Ellen DeGeneres he misses the show and its cast, including Blake Shelton.

"I really do miss it. I love the people that I met and worked with and obviously, we all know how I feel about Blake," Levine said. "I do miss it but I also don't miss how I much I had to work. I was just constantly working for so many years."

The Maroon 5 singer said he's enjoying his new ability to be present and have "the greatest time ever" with his daughters.

"Now I'm just like a stay-at-home dad. I just stay home and do very little," he said.

Levine voiced his adoration for Dusty, 3, and Gio, 19 months.

"I'm obsessed with them. I mean, I know that's a good thing 'cause they're my children," he said. "That's why I don't do much -- I genuinely just adore them in a way that I never knew I could adore any little person."

Levine is also working on new music, although he did say Dusty isn't the biggest fan of his singing.

"She just doesn't like it that much," the star said. "This one moment I spent with her just kind of playing guitar, she was playing with stuff and looking up at me every once in a while. I was like, 'Oh my god, it's working. She's loving this.' I'm auditioning for my daughter, which is ridiculous. Finally she just looked at me and touched the guitar. She's like, 'Put that down.'"

"That was like the most humbling thing that's ever happened," he added. "I don't know if I have the courage to confront her again and perform music in front of her. The other one likes it -- Gio loves music. Dusty's the manager."

Levine and Maroon 5 released the single "Memories" in September. The song will appear on the band's forthcoming new album.

LOOSE LIPS:

"This is the thing he does: 'Can a cheetah beat a rancher? Can a cheetah beat a car? Can a cheetah beat a bird? Can a cheetah beat a leaf falling?' By the time we go through all of, 'Can a cheetah beat?', I'm beat. But no, it's just joy. Just watching him learn and discover and yeah, it's wonderful."

Claire tells family: 'It's safer in the future' in 'Outlander' trailer

Claire tells family: 'It's safer in the future' in 'Outlander' trailerThe trailer for Season 5 of the romantic drama Outlander shows Jamie and Claire Fraser preparing for the Revolutionary War in 18th century North Carolina.

In the 70-second preview, time traveler Claire (Caitriona Balfe) ponders whether she should return to the 1960s where she belongs or stay with her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan,) their adult daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her boyfriend Roger (Richard Rankin.)

"It's my fault you are all here, fighting the dangers of the Carolina wilderness. I hope you don't stay," Claire tells Jamie in one scene.

Her husband agreed she would be safer in her own time.

"I'll do what must be done," Claire said, adding in a later conversation with Brianna, "If I am to keep us safe here, then time, space, history be damned."

The clip ends with Claire declaring: "It's safer in the future. It's time."

The 12-episode season is to begin on Starz on Feb. 16.

Based on Diana Gabaldon's series of novels, the show has already been renewed for Season 6.

Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton team up on mental health PSA

Royal sisters-in-law Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have teamed up on a new public service announcement supporting mental health.

Markle, 38, and Middleton, 37, and their respective husbands, Prince Harry, 35, and Prince William, 37, promote wellbeing in a PSA for Every Mind Matters released Monday.

Every Mind Matters is a new campaign from Public Health England and the National Health Service that provides tools and resources to help people take care of their mental health.

"Everyone knows that feeling, when life gets on top of us," William and Harry say. "We feel stressed, low, anxious, or have trouble sleeping. We think there's nothing to be done, nothing we can do about it."

"But now, there's a new way to help turn things around," Markle adds. "Every Mind Matters will show you simple ways to look after your mental health."

The PSA marks the couples' first collaboration in months. Markle and Harry announced in March they would establish a royal household separate from Middleton and William.

In addition, news broke in June that Markle and Harry will launch their own foundation. Middleton and William to continue to oversee the Royal Foundation, which they started with Harry in 2011.

"These changes are designed to best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new households," the palace said.

People said Pearce and Ray married in front of about 100 guests at Drakewood Farm outside Nashville. Pearce described her wedding as "earthy and whimsical and romantic."

"No matter what, I have her in my corner," Ray added. "No matter what, she has me in her corner. I tell her, you're never going to face anything alone. Never will there be anything in life that you don't look over and I'm standing beside you."
