Ginger Baker, drummer for Cream and Blind Faith, dies at 80

Ginger Baker, the British Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer with Cream and Blind Faith, died Sunday morning, two weeks after his family said he was critically ill in a hospital in southeastern England. He was 80.

"We are very sad to say that Ginger has passed away peacefully in hospital this morning. Thank you to everyone for your kind words over the past weeks," they wrote.

Baker was a member of the British rock trio Cream, which he co-founded with Eric Clapton in London in 1966. The third member of the original group, Bassist Jack Bruce, died in 2014 at 71.

In 1968 they unexpectedly broke up.

Cream sold 35 million albums in just over two years. They earned the world's first platinum disc for their double album, Wheels of Fire, which included I Feel Free and Sunshine of Your Love.

He had downplayed being labeled as one of rock's most influential musicians, telling Rhythm magazine: "It's the drummer's job to make the other guys sound good."

Clapton, 74 in 2007, wrote in his autobiography, the band was struggling at the time with an "inability to get along."

"We would just run away from one another," he wrote. "We never socialized together and never really shared ideas anymore."

His temperamental and argumentative behavior frequently led to on-stage fights, BBC reported.

Baker then worked briefly with Clapton again in Blind Faith. He then started his own jazz-rock band, Ginger Baker's Air Force, in the '70s.

In the 1980s, he played with John Lydon's Public Image Ltd,

Baker decided to leave the London music scene after the drug-related death of his friend, Jimi Hendrix.

He lived and recorded in Nigeria, Africa.

Because of financial problems, he lost control of his studio.

Born Peter Edward Baker, was nicknamed Ginger for his flaming red hair

Baker began playing drums at 16, playing in Grand Bond Organization, where he first met his Bruce.

His health had declined over the years.

In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, he said "I've got degenerative osteoarthritis, which is extremely painful."

"I'm on a regiment with a health service pain management control," he continued. "Apart from that I've got COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] from smoking."

In 2016, Baker's daughter, Leda, posted a blog post on his website that Baker was "recovering very well" after "open heart surgery and a bad fall."

Baker is survived by Kudzai Machokoto, whom he married in 2010, and three children from a previous marriage.

'Walking Dead' renewed; Lauren Cohan returning

The Walking Dead has been renewed by AMC for Season 11 and actress Lauren Cohan is set to return as a regular cast member.

The announcements were made Saturday at New York Comic Con.

Cohan played community leader Maggie Greene until midway through Season 9 of the zombie-apocalypse show. She left to star in ABC's Whiskey Cavalier, which was canceled after one season.

"The Walking Dead burst out of the gate 10 years ago as a genre show that had all the character depth of a top-tier prestige drama," said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. "And now 10 years later -- led by the brilliant Angela Kang and fueled by one of the most consistently talented casts in television -- this phenomenon is flourishing creatively, with critics and audiences embracing its reset. We're delighted to welcome back Lauren Cohan, she has meant so much to this show and its passionate, global fan-base, who are in for a fantastic ride over the coming months."

University of Kansas apologizes for Snoop Dogg's show

The University of Kansas' athletic director has apologized for a performance by hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg after preseason scrimmages by the men's and women's basketball teams.

As part of "Late Night in the Phog" at Allen Fieldhouse on Friday in Lawrence, Snoop Dog's 35-minute act included pole dancers, a money gun and profanity. A crowd of 16,300 turned out for the event.

"We apologize for the Snoop Dogg performance at Late Night," Athletic Director Jeff Long said in a statement. "We made it clear to the entertainers' managers that we expected a clean version of the show and took additional steps to communicate to our fans, including moving the artist to the final act of the evening, to ensure that no basketball activities would be missed if anyone did not want to stay for his show."

"I take full responsibility for not thoroughly vetting all the details of the performance and offer my personal apology to those who were offended. We strive to create a family atmosphere at Kansas and fell short of that this evening."

The rapper met with the players in the locker room before the show and wore a blue No. 20 Kansas jersey.

During the performance, he shot a money gun full of fake $100 bills featuring his face over the team bench areas.

Songs included Gun and Juice and Drop It Like It's Hot.

In a video produced by the school promoting the event, men's basketball coach Bill Self is wearing a shirt with a large "Adidas Basketball" logo and a chain with a "$" sign.

Self, who said he didn't see most of the performance, said he was told the performance would be appropriate.

"I didn't know there was going to be anything like that," he told reporters. "I was told this was radio edited and everything else, so I don't guess you have visuals on radio. But no, that's not the direction that anybody at our school would want that to go at all. Regardless of the entertainment it provided, it's still not the right way to provide the entertainment."

"He still go it. Basketball is my favorite sport, Thank. U. @kuhoops," Snoop Dogg posted on Instagram making a basket.

Three weeks ago the university was accused of five NCAA Level I violations, including a lack of institutional control and a violation of coaching responsibilities standard.

Which cast member is open to a 'Modern Family' spinoff?

Modern Family star Ariel Winter is open to starring on a spinoff.

The 21-year-old actress said in an interview with E! News published Friday that she'd "definitely" consider joining a spinoff once the original ABC series ends.

Winter said she hasn't been approached or heard much about a spinoff but is open to the possibility.

"I'm never going to say 'absolutely not' to something," she said. "If it got presented to me or anybody, I'm sure we'd definitely think about [it]. We'd never be 'absolutely not', we wouldn't do that."

Modern Family, which co-stars Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Sarah Hyland, premiered its 11th and final season in September. ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke voiced interest in a spinoff in February.

"I would love it. No one would be happier if there were one," Burke said. "There are some surprises and big milestones coming. They intend to really, really go out big. So, if would be terrific if a spinoff were part of that."

Winter guest starred in Thursday's episode of Law & Order: SVU. She said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she plans to tackle more diverse and complex roles once Modern Family ends.

"I want to do something completely different from what I've always done ... I think I have a lot to grow on, and I feel lucky that this was one of my first experiences moving into that next chapter," Winter said of Law & Order: SVU.

"I want to do drama. I want to do more complex roles. I want to challenge myself. I want to grow," she added. "So I'm definitely looking forward to what I can do once the show's over."
