Quentin Tarantino says his 'Star Trek' would be 'Pulp Fiction' in space

Quentin Tarantino says the new Star Trek movie would be "Pulp Fiction in space" if he were to sign on as director.

The 56-year-old filmmaker said in an interview with Deadline published Wednesday that the film would have a "unique" feel and "gangster element" with him at the helm.

Tarantino directed Pulp Fiction, a gritty and violent crime film that opened in theaters in 1994. He will work on a new Star Trek script from The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith and possibly direct the project.

"I don't know if I'll do it or not," Tarantino said. "I've got to figure it out, but Mark wrote a really cool script. I like it a lot. There's some things I need to work on but I really, really liked it."

Tarantino also responded to Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the Star Trek reboot films, who previously denied the new movie would be Pulp Fiction in space.

"Yes, it is!" Tarantino said. "If I do it, that's exactly what it'll be. It'll be Pulp Fiction in space," he said. "There's no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that's why we want to make it. It's, at the very least, unique in that regard."

"There is a gangster element to what we're doing with the Star Trek thing that works out pretty good," he added.

Tarantino said in the July issue of Empire that his Star Trek would be R-rated. Zachary Quinto, who portrays Spock, subsequently said on The HFPA in Conversation podcast that working with Tarantino would be an "amazing" experience.

The Star Trek reboot films consist of Star Trek (2009), Star Trek into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). The movies star Pegg, Quinto, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana.

Tarantino will next release the movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which opens in theaters July 26. Margot Robbie discussed playing late actress Sharon Tate in the film in a new interview this week.

Tom Cruise is back in the pilot's seat in first 'Top Gun: Maverick' trailer

Tom Cruise is back in the pilot's seat in first 'Top Gun: Maverick' trailerTom Cruise returns as the iconic U.S. Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to 1986's Top Gun.

The 2-minute preview received nearly 2 million views on YouTube in the first few hours after Cruise introduced the video at San Diego Comic Con on Thursday.

Ed Harris, playing Maverick's supervisor, runs down a list of Maverick's accomplishments, but notes he still holds the rank of captain after a 30-plus-year career when he should be an admiral.

"You can't get a promotion. You won't retire and, despite your best efforts, you refuse to die," Harris' character says.

The trailer then shows scenes of Maverick flying various aircraft and riding his motorcycle.

"The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction," Harris says.

"Maybe so, sir. But not today," Maverick replies.

Co-starring Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Lewis Pullman, the film is set for release in 2020. Joseph Kosinski directed the movie.

I'm like an infant when it comes to real life and this old soul, been-around-the-block-a-million-times artist. I still don't trust myself with the life stuff."

Kennedy Center's 2019 honorees include Sally Field, 'Sesame Street'

The 2019 Kennedy Center Honorees were announced Thursday as Earth, Wind & Fire; Sally Field; Linda Ronstadt; Sesame Street; and Michael Tilson Thomas.

The Kennedy Center said Thursday that the honorees will be presented with medallions Dec. 7 and will be celebrated the following day at the 42nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors To Celebrate Honorees' Profound Artistic Impact.

The ceremony is scheduled to be broadcast Dec. 15 on CBS.

"Earth, Wind & Fire's hooks and grooves are the foundation of a seminal style that continues to shape our musical landscape," Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein said. "Sally Field has brought us unforgettable characters, both joyous and poignant, for more than five decades."

"Linda Ronstadt is the defining voice of a generation, spanning genres, languages, and continents; Sesame Street continues to revolutionize how children and adults learn about our world; and Michael Tilson Thomas goes far beyond keeping score: he has shaped American music and musical institutions for the 21st century," he said.

'She's Gotta Have It': Netflix cancels Spike Lee series after 2 seasons

Netflix has canceled Spike Lee's series She's Gotta Have It after two seasons.

Deadline confirmed Wednesday the streaming service has opted to not renew the comedy-drama show for a third season.

"Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we're thrilled he brought the series She's Gotta Have It (1986, based on his first feature film) to Netflix," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said.

"While this is our last season, we're very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods," he added.

She's Gotta Have It is based on Lee's 1986 film of the same name and stars DeWanda Wise, Anthony Ramos, Lyriq Bent and Cleo Anthony. Lee is expected to shop the series at other networks.

Entertainment Weekly said the cancellation follows news Netflix had a loss in U.S. subscribers in its second quarter, the first time in eight years. The company attributed the loss to price increases and a weak content slate.

Wise, who plays Nola Darling, addressed She's Gotta Have It's cancellation in an Instagram Stories post Wednesday.

"She's Gotta Have It 2.0 has come to a restful close. It will live on and on thru #Netflix and I'm so thankful for all Nola Darling gifted me with. Thankful to Spike and Tonya," she wrote, referencing Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, an executive producer on the show. "Thankful for my exceptional playmates. And so very very very thankful for each and every one of you."

Lee's movie Da 5 Bloods will mark his fourth collaboration with Netflix. The film follows four African-American Vietnam War veterans who return to Vietnam seeking the remains of their late squad leader and buried treasure.

Da 5 Bloods will star Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., Giancarlo Esposito, Norm Lewis and Chadwick Boseman.

Which iconic musician will adapt 'It's a Wonderful Life' as a new musical?

Paul McCartney will adapt the beloved film It's a Wonderful Life as a new musical.

The New York Post confirmed Wednesday the 77-year-old British singer and musician is developing a stage version of the classic Christmas movie.

The new production marks McCartney's first musical. He is writing music and lyrics for the show, with Lee Hall to pen the book and co-write lyrics and Bill Kenwright to produce.

"Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me," McCartney said in a statement. "But Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. It's a Wonderful Life is a universal story we can all relate to."

Variety said Kenwright obtained rights to It's a Wonderful Life in 2016 and reached out to McCartney, who started working on the project last year.

"Out of the blue I got an email from Paul asking my thoughts on his first stab at an opening song," Kenwright recalled. "He wasn't sure -- but wanted to know what Lee and I thought of it? I played the demo. Lee and I were unanimous. Our hero was a musical theater writer!"

McCartney, a founding member of the Beatles, is still in "the final stages" of completing songs for the musical. The production is slated for a late 2020 launch in the U.K., with a later move to Broadway.

It's a Wonderful Life stars James Stewart and Henry Travers, and opened in theaters in 1946. The movie follows George Bailey (Stewart), a man contemplating suicide on Christmas Eve when his guardian angel (Travers) intervenes.
