'NYPD Blue' sequel in the works at ABC
NYPD Blue is getting a TV sequel at ABC.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the network gave a pilot production commitment to a reboot of the police procedural.
The new series will center on Theo, the son of Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), as he works to earn his detective shield and investigates his father's murder. Andy was alive as of the series finale.
Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton, who worked on the original show, will pen the script and executive produce with Dayna Bochco and Jesse Bochco, the widow and son of late series creator Steven Bochco.
The original NYPD Blue had a 12-season run from 1993 to 2005. Deadline said ABC plans to bring back several original cast members, although Franz won't reprise Andy.
"I did receive a call, and I'm flattered but not interested," the actor told Deadline.
"NYPD Blue was a high point in my life and career, and I think of it so fondly. I wish them all well and much success," he said.
Austin Majors played a young Theo in Seasons 6-12 of NYPD Blue. The character is the son of Sipowicz and assistant district attorney Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence), who died in Season 6.

Big Bird puppeteer Carol Spinney retiring from 'Sesame Street'
Puppeteer Caroll Spinney announced Wednesday that he is retiring from Sesame Street, the television show in which he performed as Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.
Spinney has worked on Sesame Street since the educational program's debut in 1969. Matt Vogel will take over the role of Big Bird and Eric Jacobson will portray Oscar the Grouch. Spinney mentored both puppeteers.
Spinney has earned numerous awards over his career including seven Emmys, two Gold Records and two Grammy honors. He co-authored and illustrated his 2003 autobiography The Wisdom of Big Bird and his life was the subject of 2014 documentary, I Am Big Bird.
"Big Bird brought me so many places, opened my mind and nurtured my soul," Spinney said in a statement.
"And I plan to be an ambassador for Sesame Workshop for many years to come. After all, we're a family! But now it's time for two performers that I have worked with and respected - and actually hand-picked for the guardianship of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch - to take my alter-egos into their hands and continue to give them life," he continued.
Sesame Street paid homage to Spinney on Twitter alongside a photo of the puppeteer next to Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.
"Before I came to Sesame Street, I didn't feel like what I was doing was very important," a statement from Spinney reads on the show's Twitter account. "Big Bird helped me find my purpose. Even as I step down from my roles, I feel I will always be Big Bird. And even Oscar, once in a while! They have given me great joy, led me to my true calling and created a lifetime of memories that I will cherish forever."
'Fuller House': Candace Cameron Bure denies cancellation rumors
Fuller House star Candace Cameron Bure says the show hasn't been canceled.
The 42-year-old actress spoke out Thursday in an interview with E! News following reports the Netflix series will end after Season 4.
"I don't know why or how that rumor got started," Bure said. "In the four years we've been doing Fuller House, they never announce a pickup before the season airs."
"We were just nominated for an Emmy," she added, referencing the show's nod for Outstanding Children's Program. "I think that everyone's going to love Season 4 and I have no doubt we're going to be back for Season 5."
Fuller House was renewed for a fourth season in January and has yet to announce a premiere date. TVLine reported Tuesday that Netflix is "seriously considering" ending the show after its fourth season.
"No decision has been made about the future of Fuller House; we're looking forward to the premiere of Season 4 later this year," a Netflix rep said.
Bure plays D.J. Tanner on Fuller House, a sequel spinoff of the ABC series Full House. The series co-stars Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber, and finished filming Season 4 in September.
"That's a wrap!!" Bure wrote on Instagram at the time. "Wow, what a ride with these ladies. I work with my best friends every day. I love you @jodiesweetin and @andreabarber SO SO SO much. Words aren't enough."

Which Game of Thrones star helped Jamie Dornan learn his lines for 'Fifty Shades'?
Peter Dinklage says he helped Jamie Dornan prep for the final Fifty Shades movie.
The 49-year-old actor said on Wednesday's episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he ran lines with Dornan prior to the star's reshoots for Fifty Shades Freed.
Dinklage and Dornan co-star in the new HBO movie My Dinner with Hervé. The pair were on the film's set when they read as Fifty Shades characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively.
"I read some of the screenplay, though, in our dressing room," Dinklage recalled. "I went in, he had to do some reshoots for Fifty Shades and I would help him out learning lines."
"I would read the Dakota Johnson parts," he added, referencing Dornan's co-star. "I was just helping a friend learn lines. I nailed it. I really did."
My Dinner with Hervé explores the unlikely friendship between late actor Hervé Villechaize (Dinklage) and struggling journalist Danny Tate (Dornan). Tate interviewed Villechaize days before the actor's suicide in September 1993.
"They realized they had so many things that paralleled," Dornan said of Villechaize and Tate's bond in an interview with USA Today.
"They were both dealing with very similar things and destructive elements of their characters," he added.
My Dinner with Hervé premieres Saturday. Dinklage is also known for playing Tyrion Lannister in the HBO series Game of Thrones, which will return for an eighth and final season in 2019.
