'The Office' wouldn't work in 2018, says Steve Carell

Steve Carell said he doesn't think the politically incorrect humor of his mockumentary series The Office would work in a 2018 revival.

"But apart from the fact that I just don't think that's a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted 10 years ago," Carell told Esquire magazine.

He added: "The climate's different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he's certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That's the point, you know? But I just don't know how that would fly now. There's a very high awareness of offensive things today -- which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn't really work."

Carell played the well-meaning, but obnoxious Dunder-Mifflin regional manager for seven seasons on the show 2005-11.

The series continued after Carell left, with Ed Helms running the fictional office through 2013. The show is available to stream on Netflix. Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling and John Krasinski co-star.

It was reported last year that NBC was considering reviving The Office with a mix of old and new cast members for the upcoming television season, but no official announcement was ever made.

The Office is based on a British comedy, which ran two seasons 2001-03 and was created by Ricky Gervais.

Gervais reprised his role of Davd Brent -- the U.K. version of Michael Scott -- in the 2017 TV movie, David Brent: Life on the Road.

Carell can now be seen in the big-screen family drama, Beautiful Boy.

Christina Aguilera cancels show after losing her voice

Christina Aguilera is resting and recovering after canceling a show due to illness.

The 37-year-old singer postponed a stop on her Liberation tour Thursday after losing her voice. Aguilera was to perform at Casino Rama Resort in Orillia, Canada.

"MY FIGHTERS, MY FRIENDS - it aches me to share that I am under the weather and have lost my voice today," the star wrote on Twitter. "Per doctor's order, I need to rest tonight in order to get well asap."

"I have kept you waiting so long and I look forward to each night on this tour," she added. "I promise to make tonight up to you with a new date very soon - until then I am sending love and gratitude for your support and I CANNOT WAIT to get back on the stage after this short rest."

Aguilera is scheduled to perform Saturday in Detroit, Mich. She started the tour in September in support of her new album, Liberation, and will bring the venture to a close Nov. 11 in Atlanta, Ga.

"With this record, I'm stripping back a lot and just trying to find myself again -- just the true love and the art in the process, and not just going for some formulaic sort of force-fed direction that we can get caught up in," the star said in the October issue of Cosmopolitan.

"I want to flip it on its ear and I want to do something completely unexpected from a pop-formatted show -- a fresh perspective that I've never done this of a tour before -- super creative, super interesting," she added.

Aguilera's former Mickey Mouse Club co-stars Britney Spears and Ryan Gosling appeared on Friday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Spears teased huge news to come, while Gosling praised Spears and Aguilera's talent.

Netflix cancels 'Iron Fist' after two seasons

Marvel Television and Netflix have confirmed its comic-book adaptation Iron Fist will not return for a third season on the streaming service.

"Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners," a statement on the Marvel website said Friday. "We're thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we've shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on."

The two parties did not specifically say if the show is being shopped around to other networks or digital platforms.

Starring Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick, the first two seasons of Iron Fist are now streaming on Netflix.

The service is also home to the Marvel shows Luke Cage, Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Johnny Depp defends 'Fantastic Beasts' casting after abuse allegations

Johnny Depp is defending his casting in Fantastic Beasts following lingering allegations he abused his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The 55-year-old actor spoke out in an interview with Entertainment Weekly following backlash to his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its upcoming sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Depp debuted as Grindelwald at the end of the first movie and will have a starring part in the sequel. He said he felt bad for Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts author J.K. Rowling after fans decried his involvement with the films.

"I'll be honest with you, I felt bad for J.K. having to field all these various feelings from people out there. I felt bad that she had to take that. But ultimately, there is real controversy," the star told the magazine.

"The fact remains I was falsely accused," he said. "J.K. has seen the evidence and therefore knows I was falsely accused, and that's why she has publicly supported me. She doesn't take things lightly. She would not stand up if she didn't know the truth."

Rowling voiced her support for Depp in a statement on her website in December. She acknowledged fans had "legitimate questions and concerns," but said she would stand by Depp's casting.

"Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies," the author said.

Heard accused Depp of physical abuse after filing for divorce from the actor in May 2015. Depp's lawyer, Adam Waldman, defended the actor this month after he denied abusing Heard in an interview with GQ magazine.

"In his GQ interview, Mr. Depp is simply defending himself against Ms. Heard's lingering false abuse accusations. Johnny Depp is the abuse victim," Waldman said.
