Whoopi Defends Mel... 'Gibson Is Not A Racist'

Whoopi has defended Mel Gibson against allegations he's a
racist after he was allegedly heard using offensive language
in an expletive-laden, recorded argument with his ex-girl-
friend Oksana Grigorieva.

Audio of the fight, which leaked on RadarOnline.com on Friday,
featured a voice believed to be Gibson's berating a woman, said to
be Grigorieva, about the way she dresses.

Representatives for Gibson have yet to confirm the authenticity of
the tape, but Whoopi has defended the Mel's alleged crude language,
insisting he's simply being a "bonehead".

Whoopi claims Mel would not have maintained a friendship with her
and her children if he was really a racist.

Speaking on 'The View' on Monday, she says, "I don't like what he
did here, but I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist. He may be
a bonehead.

"I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he's being a
bonehead, but I can't say he's a racist having spent time with him
in my house with my kids. Make no mistake (he's not a racist)."

But she is quick to clarify she does not approve of his alleged
behavior and his language - if the tape is authentic.

She adds, "I'm not defending Mel, I'm simply saying that... I don't
= see him as that (a racist) because that's not my experience with him." =

Edward Norton... Fired Before Being Rehired As Hulk...

In a remarkable case of a star being fired for being uncooperative
before even being hired, Marvel Studios said over the weekend that
it will not cast Edward Norton as The Incredible Hulk in the
upcoming The Avengers.

Norton, who played the role in The Hulk movie and reportedly clashed
with producers over the script was ridiculed by Kevin Feige, Marvel
Studios' president of production. "In a statement, Feige said, "Our =
decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead
= rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and
collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members."

Suggesting that Norton has no intention of allowing the matter to fade =
away, his agent quickly lashed out at what he called Feige's "offensive=
statement." Swardstrom claimed that Feige had called him only two month= s
ago to tell him that he wanted to cast Norton in The Avengers and that =
they discussed making the announcement at the ComiCon convention in San =
Diego, which opens on July 22.

He said that negotiations on terms of a deal had been going on until
last Wednesday when a representative called to say that Marvel had
decided to go in another direction with the part.

A rep for Richard Gere has dismissed rumors that Richard is
looking to sell his luxury inn after losing his pastry chef.

Richard and his wife Carey Lowell restored an old farmhouse in
Westchester County and opened the Bedford Post Inn in February
last year.

Recent reports suggest the bed-and-breakfast is heading for a
change of ownership after pastry expert Chris Broburg stepped
down from his job last month.

Word is American lifestyle queen and local resident Martha Stewart
was interested in purchasing the Bedford Post Inn from Gere, but
reps for the actor's farmhouse insist the property is not for sale,

*-*-* GUESS WHO *-*-*-

The actress who has played down reports she's contemplating an early
retirement from Hollywood, insisting comments made in a recent Vanity
= Fair interview have been blown out of proportion?

It's Angelina Jolie... A recent Vanity Fair magazine article claimed
Angelina was considering quitting acting for good to devote her time
to her roles as a mother and a humanitarian.

She was quoted as saying, "It's (acting) not the most important thing i= n
my life... I'm very, very grateful, it's a fun job. It's a luxury... But =
I don't think I'll do it much longer. Because I have a happy home... I =
got back from work last night, and everybody was playing music and
dancing and I suddenly found myself dancing around with a bunch of little=
fun crazy people."

But Jolie blames media overspin for sparking reports she is turning her =
back on her career for good, although she admits she is keen to take some=
time out to pursue other activities.

She says, "They (Vanity Fair editors) know how to sell a magazine. I =
simply said that in the years to come I?ll be doing less of acting and =
more of other things. It?s really not that interesting.

"It's not that I'm retiring, but there will be less films at some point=
and I'd love to do other things. I'd love to live in Africa for six
months and fly planes."
