BIRTH DATE: November 13, 1935, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

CLAIM TO FAME: He is primarily known for his work in the horror film genre.

FAMILY LIFE: He was first married to actress Garn Stephens, who appeared in Halloween III: Season of the Witch. After they divorced, he married Janis Lee Rodgers in 1986, with whom he has one child, Taylor.

INFO: Atkins' acting career began when he appeared in stage plays both on-and-off Broadway, and his first film role was in 1968's The Detective, which starred Frank Sinatra.

In 1980, he appeared in The Fog as Nick Castle and as Rehme in the 1981 science fiction thriller Escape from New York. He starred as Dr. Dan Challis in Halloween III: Season of the Witch. He appeared in three of George A. Romero's projects: Creepshow (1982), Two Evil Eyes (1990), and Bruiser (2000).

In 1986, he appeared in the cult horror film Night of the Creeps as Detective Ray Cameron. He also appeared in the films Lethal Weapon (1987) and Striking Distance (1993), and on television in the 1970s series The Rockford Files as Lt. Alex Diehl.

On the stage, he performed in the one-man show The Chief at Pittsburgh Public Theater, and starred as Ebenezer Scrooge in A Musical Christmas Carol at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.He appeared on Broadway in David Storey's The Changing Room, for which he received the 1973 Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Performer.

TRIVIA: During his childhood, he was a fan of horror and science fiction, one of his best loved films being the Howard Hawks classic The Thing from Another World.

Attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and was a member of the Gamma Phi Fraternity.

Has a Golden Retriever named Gus.

Has appeared with Adrienne Barbeau in four different films: The Fog (1980), Escape from New York (1981), Creepshow (1982) and Two Evil Eyes (1990).

WHERE IS HE NOW: In 2009, he had a supporting role as retired sheriff Jim Burke in the remake My Bloody Valentine 3D. In 2011, he co-starred with Nicolas Cage in Todd Farmer's Drive Angry.
