birthdate of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King spoke out
for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, leading
to a successful protest of racial discrimination in federal
and state law.
The third Monday in January has been a federal holiday in
King's honor ever since Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into
law in 1983. It was first observed in 1986. Here are a few of
the significant events in King's life...
