TRIVIA TODAY - Monday, January 24, 2011

Greetings Infomaniacs,

Last week I had the opportunity to watch the documentary
"Oceans" at the library. It was very interesting to learn
about life at the bottom of the ocean! Here are a few fun
ocean facts to kick off your Monday morning...

Enjoy!

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: "We never know the worth of water till the well is
dry."

HINT: (1608-1661), English churchman and historian.

RANDOM TIDBITS

The oceans cover 71% (and rising) of the Earth's surface
and contain 97% of the Earth's water. Less than 1% is fresh
water, and 2-3% is contained in glaciers and ice caps (and
decreasing).

***

The pressure at the deepest point in the ocean is more than
22 thousand pounds, or the equivalent of one person trying
to support 50 jumbo jets.

***
The highest tides in the world are at the Bay of Fundy,
which separates New Brunswick from Nova Scotia. At some
times of the year the difference between high and low tide
is taller than a three-story building.

The lowest known point on Earth, called the Challenger Deep,
is 36,201 feet deep, in the Marianas Trench in the western
Pacific. To get an idea of how deep that is, if you could
take Mt. Everest and place it at the bottom of the trench
there would still be over a mile of ocean above it.

***

The Pacific Ocean, the world's largest water body, occupies
a third of the Earth's surface. The Pacific contains about
25,000 islands (more than the total number in the rest of
the world's oceans combined), almost all of which are found
south of the equator.

***

A mouthful of seawater may contain millions of bacterial
cells, hundreds of thousands of phytoplankton and tens of
thousands of zooplankton.

Up towards the blue sky, and down towards the ground.
I'm present tense and past tense too, so why don't you come
for a ride, just me and you!

What am I?
