TRIVIA TODAY - Monday, March 28, 2011

Greetings Infomaniacs,

I can't go to a movie without getting a bag of popcorn.
Unfortunately, movie prices are getting so high that it's
very rare I ever go to the theater to see a movie these
days. But when I do, I must budget for some popcorn and a
soda. Did you ever wonder why it is that popcorn is a staple
of movie theaters? Today I have for you a little history on
this very topic...check it out!

Enjoy!

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: "I'm someone who believes the only way to see a
movie is in a big theater, on a big screen, with a big bag
of popcorn."

HINT: (1944-), American businessman and politician, served
as the United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1995

RANDOM TIDBITS

Popcorn wasn?t introduced to the general public as a snack
food until around 1840, when it first made appearances at
fairs, carnivals, and rallies.

***

When the portable popcorn machine was invented in 1885, the
salty, buttery snack gained popularity. Popcorn vendors were
quick to set up shop and introduce newbies to this tasty
snack.

***

The popcorn boom happened at the same time as dime theaters
came into existence. Vendors seized the opportunity and
sold their treats outside of movies. However, the mess left
behind irritated movie theater owners, especially when the
fancier theaters of the 1910s and 20s were built.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

When the Great Depression began, desperate theater owners
installed their own popcorn machines inside. Soon after,
concession stands were part of the designs of theatres,
and a movie and a bucket of popcorn became a main form of
entertainment for Americans well into the 1930s.

***

The introduction of TV threatened the movie business once
more, and concession stands became a vital part of a
theater's existence. When sugar rations occured during
World War II and candy wasn't an option at the movies,
popcron sales skyrocketed.

***

Today, concession stand sales account for a whopping 40
percent of movie theatres? net revenue.
