TRIVIA TODAY - Monday, February 20, 2012

Greetings Infomaniacs,

So, the other night I had quite a catastrophe in my place. I had just gotten home from class and decided to throw a load of towels in the wash while I did some homework. I got the laundry started, and then quickly got absorbed with my studies.

Later, when I went to put the towels into the dryer, I stepped into the hallway next to the laundry room and heard a loud squish. I looked down in horror to see water flowing out of the laundry room, down the hallway, and in the bathroom across the hall.

At first, I thought maybe the washer overflowed and I immediately began lamenting the fact that I would probably have to get it fixed or replace it. Upon closer inspection, however, I realized that the cause of the flood was actually my fault. I had absentmindedly left a couple of rags hanging over the laundry room tub and they apparently fell into the tub and clogged the drain, therefore causing the tub to fill up and water to overflow everywhere!

It took every clean towel I had to dry up the mess, along with a bunch of paper towels. I learned my lesson - I certainly won't be leaving anything anywhere near the laundry tub ever again! At least it forced me to mop so I do have some sparkling clean floors right now!

Enjoy!
Melissa

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

HINT: (1917-1963), 35th President of the United States.

RANDOM TIDBITS

The federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February is not officially called Presidents Day. Instead, it is Washington's Birthday.

There was an attempt in 1968 to officially name the holiday Presidents Day. However, this suggestion died in committee. Many states, however, choose to call their own celebration on this day "Presidents Day."

Many across the newly formed United States celebrated Washington's Birthday in the 17th century while George Washington was still alive. However, it wasn't until 1885 that Chester Arthur signed the bill that made it a federal holiday.

Even though many states celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday concurrently with Washington's birthday, it is not a federally designated holiday.

Traditionally, many celebrated and continue to celebrate Washington's Birthday with desserts made with cherries. Cherry pie, cherry cake, bread made with cherries, or just a huge bowl of cherries are often enjoyed on this day.

On February 22nd of almost every year since 1888, Washington's Farewell Address has been read in the US Senate. While this does not happen on Presidents Day, it is an annual celebration of Washington's Birthday that stems from 1862 when the Address was read as a way to boost morale during the Civil War.
