TRIVIA TODAY - Monday, December 28, 2009

Greetings Infomaniacs,

After almost a week off work, it's tough getting back into
the swing of things. It was nice to have the time off to
relax and enjoy the holidays with family and friends. Now
it's time to make the most of the last week of 2009!

Enjoy!

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life
by what we give."

HINT: (1874-1965), British politician known chiefly for his
leadership of the United Kingdom during World War II. He
served as Prime Minister from 1940 to 1945 and again from
1951 to 1955.

RANDOM TIDBITS

Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26 in Great Britain.
While the exact origins of the holiday are obscure, it is
likely that Boxing Day began in England during the Middle
Ages.

***

Some historians say the holiday developed because servants
were required to work on Christmas Day, but took the
following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit
their families, their employers would present them with
gift boxes.

***

Another theory is that the boxes placed in churches where
parishioners deposited coins for the poor were opened and
the contents distributed on December 26, which is also the
Feast of St. Stephen.

Do you remember Bozo The Clown?

If you're like me you grew up watching Bozo The Clown. There
were many different Bozo's around the country. Here in Chicago
it was Bob Bell. Even Willard Scott got his start being Bozo.

But there was one Bozo who started it all and to most people
he IS the one and only Bozo. That's Larry Harmon.

On July 3, 2008 we lost Larry. Luckily his work and the magic
that is Bozo will live on forever. Check out this video clip
of Bozo.

As time went by, Boxing Day gift giving expanded to include
those who had rendered a service during the previous year.
This tradition survives today as people give presents to
tradesmen, mail carriers, doormen, porters, and others who
have helped them.

***

Boxing Day is just one of the British bank holidays
recognized since 1871 that are observed by banks, government
offices, and the post office. The others include Christmas,
Good Friday, Easter, Whitmonday (the day after Pentecost),
and the banking holiday on the last Monday in August.

***

The Feast of St. Stephen also takes place on December 26.
St. Stephen was one of the seven original deacons of the
Christian Church who were ordained by the Apostles to care
for widows and the poor. He was stoned to death by a mob,
and as he died, he begged God not to punish his killers.
