TRIVIA TODAY - Monday, June 7, 2010

Greetings Infomaniacs,

There's nothing I like better on a summer day than enjoying
a hot dog fresh off the grill. I love my hot dogs slathered
in ketchup, which is practically a sin here in Chicago.

A "true" Chicago-style hot dog consists of mustard, onion,
sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or
wedges, pickled sport peppers, and celery salt.

In fact, some hot dog places in the city don't even have
ketchup to put on your dog! Good thing I always keep a spare
ketchup packet in my purse for emergencies!

Enjoy!
Melissa

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: ?A hot dog at the ball park is better than steak at
the Ritz.?

HINT: (1899-1957), American Actor who became a preeminent
motion picture tough guy and was a top box office attraction
during the 1940s and 50s.

RANDOM TIDBITS

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that
over seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans
between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the July 4th
weekend alone (the biggest hot-dog holiday of the year),
155 million will be consumed.

***

The term "hot dog" is credited to sports cartoonist Tad
Dorgan. At a 1901 baseball game at the Polo Grounds in New
York, vendors began selling hot dachsund sausages in rolls.
From the press box, Dorgan could hear the vendors yelling,
"Get your dachshund sausages while they're red hot!" He
sketched a cartoon depicting the scene but wasn't sure how
to spell "dachshund" so he called them simply, "hot dogs."

***

By law, a hot dog can contain up to 3.5 percent of "non-
meat ingredients." This is usually just some type of milk
or soy product used to add to the nutritional value. Many
hot dogs may be relatively high in fat and sodium, but they
are also a good source of protein, iron, and other necessary
vitamins.

Council research shows that adults think mustard is the
condiment of choice, while children prefer ketchup. However,
preferences are different from region to region. In New
York, hot dogs are typically served with a lighter mustard
and steamed onions, while Chicago hot dogs can come with
mustard, relish, onions, tomato slices, or pretty much
anything at all.

***

In New England, hot dogs are served in a top-loaded bun.
Top-loaded buns are buttered on the side and split open on
top. These buns are also often used to make lobster rolls.
Outside of New England, the common type of hot dog bun is
the side-loaded, meaning they are split open on the side.

***

In 1987, the city of Frankfurt celebrated the 500th birthday
of the hot dog in that city. It's said that the frankfurter
was developed there in 1487, five years before Christopher
Columbus set sail for the new world. The people of Vienna
(Wien), Austria, point to the term "wiener" to prove their
claim as the birthplace of the hot dog.
