TRIVIA TODAY - Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Greetings Infomaniacs,

Today is Groundhog Day, and Punxsutawney Phil, the country's
most famous groundhog, did not see his shadow! This
supposably means that spring will be arriving early this
year. Living in the suburbs of Chicago, I find that hard to
believe right now since we are blanketed by about two feet of
snow. However, I will be optimistic that this prediction is
correct, and this will be the last of the brutal winter
weather...

Enjoy!

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: "The trouble with weather forecasting is that it's
right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for
us to rely on it."

HINT: (1584-1652), Scottish scholar and royal librarian to
King James VI and I, and King Charles I.

RANDOM TIDBITS

The name ?woodchuck? comes from an Algonquian (possibly
Narragansett) name for the animal, wuchak.

***

The average animal weighs between four to nine pounds but
some (in places where there is alfalfa farming, for example)
have been known to reach 30 pounds.

***

Groundhogs are champion diggers. On average, an animal will
remove about 700 pounds of soil to make a burrow. The
burrow is designed with several rooms and extends for 25 to
35 feet. One to three entrances are included.

Groundhog Day - Blizzard

Weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) can't wait to get out
of Punxsutawney after covering the annual Groundhog's Day
festival. However, a blizzard hits the town and forces Phil
and his crew to have to stay overnight.

Groundhogs hibernate for three to six months each year and,
prior to going underground, will accumulate a half inch
layer of fat to hold them over. An adult animal will eat
about one third of its body weight per day in late summer.

***

While hibernating, a woodchuck?s body temperature can drop
from about 99 degrees to as low as 37. The heart rate of a
hibernating woodchuck slows from about 80 beats per minute
to five.

***

The ?Groundhog Day? legend comes from German tradition
when, on Candlemas Day, people would tell a tale of
hedgehogs or badgers serving as a test for the remaining
duration of winter. The first official Groundhog Day was
celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney,
Pennsylvania.
