TRIVIA TODAY - Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Greetings Infomaniacs,

I'm so excited that summer is right around the corner and I
can finally enjoy being outside. However, being a pale,
freckle-faced redhead means that as much as I love the sun,
it can be my enemy if I'm not careful.

I learned my lesson the hard way a couple of summers ago
when I went to an afternoon Cubs baseball game and I forgot
to bring sunscreen.

My friends and I had seats in the bleachers - which means no
relief from the sun - and nobody had any sun protection with
them. Not smart!

I didn't realize just how badly I burnt until later that night
when my arms blistered and my hands swelled up. I was lucky
that I didn't get sun poisoning, but it served as a great
lesson not to go anywhere without sunscreen in my purse!

Enjoy!
Melissa

TODAY'S MYSTERY QUOTE

QUOTE: "Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others
cannot keep it from themselves."

HINT: (1860-1937), Scottish author and dramatist, best
remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan.

RANDOM TIDBITS

Efforts to protect our skin from the sun go all the way
back to ancient times. Ancient Egyptians considered light
skin more attractive than dark skin, but found it difficult
to maintain in Egypt's hot and sunny environment. Recently
translated papyri and tomb walls reveal the ingredients of
potions used to ward off a tan and heal damaged skin.

***

Some of the ingredients used by the Egyptians included rice
bran extracts, jasmine, and lupine extract - ingredients
that are still found today in our sunscreens. Gamma oryzanol
extracted from rice bran has UV-absorbing properties,
jasmine helps mend skin damage, and lupine extract lightens
the skin.

***

In 1777, Carl Wilhelm Scheele demonstrated that paper strips
dipped in a silver chloride solution became black after
exposure to sunlight. Scheele also showed that the paper
strips were affected more by blue light than by red light.
In 1801, a German man by the name of Johann Wilhelm Ritter
took the experiment one step further by measuring the
effects of light below the visible blue, thus leading to
the discovery of ultraviolet rays.

Otto Veiel of Linz, Austria, published one of the first
reports of a substance being used to protect skin from
ultraviolet rays in 1878. He discovered that tannin worked
as a kind of sunscreen, but the staining properties of
tannin limited the usefulness of his find.

***

Karl Eilham Hausser und Wilhelm Vahle reported in 1922 that
sunburn in human skin is caused by the part of the ultra-
violet spectrum between 280 and 315 nanometers. They
realized that the skin could be protected by filtering out
those wavelengths. This led to the first commercially
available sunscreen, produced in 1928 in the United States.

***

In the United States, Miami pharmacist Benjamin Greene
prepared a red jelly-like substance in his home oven in
the 1940's. He tested the product on his own bald head
before supplying it to soldiers during World War II. This
formula did not go over too well as it stained fabrics and
was not super effective, but Greene kept at it and ended
up being the founder of Coppertone.
