TRIVIA TODAY - Wednesday, September 1, 2010

Greetings Infomaniacs,

The other day I was absorbed in a project on the computer
when my co-worker Shari suddenly let out a bloodcurdling
scream from her desk across the room. Fearing the worst, I
jumped up in a panic yelling "What's wrong?!?"

"There..." she said pointing at a small dot on her desk while
rapidly moving in reverse, "please, it's a spider, please,
make it go away."

I moved a little closer to see the offending creature that was
causing such hysterics, and saw a little spider the size of my
pinky nail making its way across the desk. Although not a huge
fan of spiders myself, I could see I was going to have to step
up and take charge in this situation. I grabbed a tissue, took
a deep breath and handled the issue. "All gone!" I announced.

I could hear Shari release the breath she had been holding.
I've never met anyone with such an intense fear of spiders,
but the poor girl was so relieved it was gone that she bought
me a cup of coffee!

Enjoy!
Melissa

Although spiders do not have a nose or ears, their body is
covered with tiny hairs that are able to sense vibrations,
touch, and sounds. For example, the hairs can sense the tiny
footsteps of an insect coming closer.

***

The majority of spiders will only live for a year or two.
However, some tarantulas can live to be 30 years old.

The spitting spider, a small spider that could be living in
your basement, can catch it's prey (such as a fly) through
spitting. It sends a gummy gluelike substance in a zig zag
pattern to trap its prey like strapping tape.

***

While many spiders only lay a few eggs, some spiders can lay
up to 2,000 eggs. The wolf spider will carry her young on her
back for a few days.

In the 1970's, P.N. Witt, a spiderologist and other scientists
sent spiders into space on Skylab to see how spiders would
build their webs without any gravity. Even though they had
complete weighlessness (zero gravity), the spiders still
built normal webs.
