Trivia Today - Monday, May 5, 2014

Greetings Infomaniacs,

Happy Cinco de Mayo! On Friday, the library where I work hosted a big "Movie and Dinner" fundraiser with a Cinco de Mayo theme. We showed the Mexican-themed movie Tortilla Soup on our big movie screen, followed by a delicious Mexican dinner in our upstairs area.

We had decorations, maracas, mariachi music, chips and salsa, fajitas, enchiladas, Spanish rice and refried beans. The only thing missing was a giant pitcher of margaritas!

Enjoy!
Melissa

RANDOM TIDBITS

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. That occurred 50 years prior to the Battle of Puebla. It is celebrated on September 16.

The day is a bigger deal in the United States. In Mexico, the day is observed with political speeches and battle reenactments. Many of the actual celebration and battle re-enactment take place in Puebla.

The world's largest Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place in Los Angeles.

According to Smithsonian magazine, more than one person has claimed they invented the margarita. Carlos "Danny" Herrera reportedly developed the drink for an actress at his Tijuana-area restaurant in 1938.

Musical artists like War, Senses Fail and Liz Phair all have songs titled after the holiday.
