TRIVIA TODAY - Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Greetings Infomaniacs,

Now that I have a place of my own, I often get asked if I
am going to get a pet. There's always a debate between
getting a cat or a dog, and I would rather have a dog if I
did get a pet. I grew up with a dog and I am just used to
having one around the house.

However, I don't know much about cats, so I decided to
look up a few things about them. While researching, I
came across some fun facts that I thought I would share
with you!

As for the decision on the pet...I'd rather just worry
about taking care of myself right now!

Enjoy!
Melissa

RANDOM TIDBITS

The cat's clavicle, or collarbone, does not connect with
other bones but is buried in the muscles of the shoulder
region. This lack of a functioning collarbone allows them
to fit through any opening the size of their head.

***

A cat sees about six times better than a human at night,
and needs 1/6 the amount of of light that a human does - it
has a layer of extra reflecting cells which absorb light.

***

If a cat is frightened, the hair stands up fairly evenly
all over the body; when the cat is threatened or is ready
to attack, the hair stands up only in a narrow band along
the spine and tail.

Solving the Mystery of a Cat's Nine Lives

The old saying is that a cat has nine lives. Cats many
times avoid trauma when they fall from great heights
because they are relaxed, and have time to reach freefall.

Cats have a special scent organ located in the roof of
their mouth, called the Jacobson's organ. It analyzes
smells - and is the reason why a cat might sometimes
"sneer" (called the flehmen response or flehming) when
they encounter a strong odor.

***

A cat has a total of 24 whiskers, four rows of whiskers on
each side. The upper two rows can move independently of the
bottom two rows. A cat uses its whiskers for measuring
distances.

***

Cats lose almost as much fluid in the saliva while grooming
themselves as they do through urination.
