* Plan your travel, selecting both primary and alternate
routes.

* Let someone know your travel routes and itinerary so if
you don't arrive on time, officials will know where to search
for you.

* Check the latest weather information on your radio.

* Try not to travel alone -- two or three people are
preferable.

* Travel in a convoy (with another vehicle or more) if
possible.

* Drive carefully and defensively. Watch for ice patches on
bridges and overpasses.

* If a storm begins to be too much for you to handle, seek
refuge immediately.

* If your car should become disabled, stay with the vehicle,
running your engine and heater for short intervals. Be sure
to "crack" a window in the vehicle to avoid carbon monoxide
build-up.

* When help arrives, if you must abandon your vehicle,
remember your vehicle may be towed if it poses an immediate
traffic hazard or interferes with snow removal.

* Abandoned or unattended vehicles may be towed when they
are:
-- Abandoned or left unattended on a toll highway or
expressway for two hours or more.
-- Abandoned on a highway in an urban district for 10 hours
or more.
-- Abandoned or left unattended on a highway outside of an
urban district for 24 hours or more.

* During winter travel, motorists can protect themselves
from extreme weather conditions by dressing for the weather,
not their destination. Dressing for the weather may reduce
the risk of frostbite in the event you become stranded.

* If you find yourself stranded, a means of communication
can save your life. If a cell phone is available, ensure the
battery is charged. If necessary call 911 for police assist-
ance.

* When calling 911 from a cell phone, remember to give a
location such as a highway route number and the nearest
intersection or town, so that help will be able to find you
as soon as possible.
