Travel Tips - November 27, 2009

Like many of you, I rely on my computer everyday, and the
thought of leaving it at home when traveling makes me cringe
a little. Fortunately, advances in modern technology make it
much easier to bring our loyal laptops along for the ride,
but obviously we don't want to worry about computer problems
arising on our travels. Here are some computer travel tips
that can keep you out of technological trouble!

P.S. If you're interested you can now post comments on this
and recent issues on our forum at...

Things to Bring:

-Firewall and virus protection - Just as important to do
this on your laptop as it is on your home computer.

-Software components - It's a good idea to use the same
software both at the office and on your laptop to ease the
stress of working while on the go.

-International adapter plugs - Definitely necessary for
international travel so you're not stuck with no way to plug
in.

-List of necessary passwords - Either save these on your
computer (in a password-protected file for greater security)
or, even better, commit them to memory. Do not carry hand-
written lists or print-outs of your passwords.

-Contact numbers for technical support - Keep phone numbers
and Web sites for technical support companies close at hand.

-Backup storage - Bring along DVD's, CD's and/or thumb drives
so that you can back up your files on the road. If your
laptop crashes for some reason, you'll still have your data.

-Internet accessories - In case your hotel doesn't have
wireless Internet access, you should carry phone and
Ethernet cables.

* Bring your laptop and all of its components in a carry-on
computer case. You don't want to worry about rough handling
or theft due to checking your laptop at the airport.

* Charge your battery fully before traveling, and recharge
during layovers whenever possible.

* Contact your hotel to find out what the connection specifics
are so you can plan accordingly. Ask if they have rooms
equipped for business travelers - these might include high-
speed Internet access, fax machines, and printers.

* When you return, copy any important or changed files to
your desktop computer. It's easy to accidentally use the
wrong file without noticing if there are only small changes
between versions.

* To prevent theft, disguise your computer while traveling.
Keep it in an unconventional bag so it doesn't become a red
flag for thieves.

* An essential investment when traveling with expensive
equipment is a motion alarm. You attach the device to your
luggage and the receiver stays with you. If someone attempts
to steal your bag, an alarm will sound when your luggage
reaches a set distance away from the receiver.
