* Avoid peak travel dates - Consider traveling on
Thanksgiving day rather than Wednesday - you'll encounter
less crowds and more deals. Try to avoid flying back on
Sunday evening as this is a peak travel time. The same rules
apply for Christmas and New Year's Day - fly on the holiday
itself if possible, and avoid Sunday evening at the end of
the long weekend.

* Book early - Fares will only increase as the holidays
approach, so don't hold out in hopes of a late-breaking sale.
Be prepared to be flexible with dates and flight times.

* Shop around - During this peak travel season, make your
search as broad as possible to learn all of your options.
Many Web sites include features like "search adjacent days
or airports" that can help improve your hunt for the best
fares and travel times.

* Know your airports - By checking alternate airports, you
can score on almost every front -- parking, rental cars,
traffic to and from, nearby hotels -- and save both time
and money. Also, keep in mind that smaller airports see
fewer flights and, typically, fewer delays...

* Plot connections carefully - While booking your flight,
be sure to give yourself sufficient time during layovers,
and factor in some time for flight delays and weather
problems.

* Leave early - It may seem like common sense, but it
doesn't hurt to remind travelers to leave early! With
traffic jams, full parking lots, and long lines practically
a given, allow yourself enough time to get through all the
hurdles without the added stress of running late.

* Pack wisely - If you can pack everything into your carry-
on, by all means, do it. But keep in mind the tricky TSA
rules about liquids and gels. You may bring liquids and
gels in three-ounce or smaller containers, packed within a
single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.

* Use the Web for more than just booking - Whenever possible,
print your boarding passes at home or use check-in kiosks to
save time during peak travel dates. Think about doing your
holiday shopping online and having your gifts shipped to
your destination. This will cut down on luggage and the risk
of them getting lost.

* Travel early or late in the day - Airports tend to be
least congested during morning hours and later in the day
after peak times pass. The only downside is that staffing
may be lighter so check-in may take a bit.

* Consider package deals - Peak travel periods can be the
best time to buy package deals as the bundled pricing
offered by packages can be very competitive, even (or
especially) at times of high demand.
