Tom Clancy, author of espionage novels, dead at 66

Tom Clancy, author of a string of espionage and military novels including "The Hunt for Red October," has died at the age of 66, his publisher says. He passed Tuesday after a brief illness at Johns Hopkins Hospital, The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday. Announcing the author's death, his publisher, Ivan Held, president of G.P. Putnam's Sons, did not give a cause of death, The New York Times reported. Four of his novels have been turned in feature films. His novel "The Hunt for Red October" had made $1.3 million four years after it was published in 1984. Born April 12, 1947, in Baltimore, Clancy ran an insurance agency before branching out into writing. He became part owner of the Baltimore Orioles in 1993 and agreed to purchase the Minnesota Vikings in 1998. However, the cost of his divorce from his first wife, Wanda, forced him to abandon that plan. Clancy married Alexandra Marie Llewellyn, a freelance journalist, in 1999. His next book, "Command Authority," is scheduled to be published Dec. 3.

Anastacia recovering after a double mastectomy

U.S. pop star Anastacia says she is recovering from a double mastectomy, following a second breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year. The 45-year-old singer successfully battled the disease in 2003, but learned last winter it had recurred, forcing her to cancel a planned concert tour. "In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month l wanted to take the opportunity to support a cause particularly close to my heart," the BBC quoted Anastacia as saying. "l was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time earlier this year and am currently in the final stages of recovery after undergoing a double mastectomy," she said. "It has been an intense journey, but l am feeling great and ready to start the next chapter. Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives all who are facing this disease a chance to gain strength and support from each other. Early detection has saved my life twice. I will continue to battle and lend my voice in any way I can."

Brant Daugherty robbed after 'Dancing with the Stars'

Brant Daugherty has revealed he was robbed at gunpoint last week outside his Los Angeles apartment building after a good night on "Dancing with the Stars." Daugherty told People Magazine about the Sept. 23 robbery while the show was being filmed Monday. "After the show I got dropped off and was walking up to my apartment building and a man followed me up with a gun and told me to give him my stuff," Daugherty said in a backstage interview. "It was a complete random occurrence of events and it led up to one of the worst nights of my life -- after having such a great night last week on the dance floor." Daugherty said the robber got his dancing shoes, two T-shirts, a pair of workout pants and his cellphone. Peta Murgatroyd, the 28-year-old comedian's professional dancing partner, said Daughterty is able to joke about the robbery, but it clearly shook him. "He came in the next morning ... and he was so flustered and emotional. I was like, 'Oh my Lord, he's had the worst time,'" said Murgatroyd.

Barbara Walters apologizes to Katy Perry

Barbara Walters apologized to Katy Perry Tuesday for reprimanding the pop star after she was late to their 2011 interview in New York. "I shouldn't have done the interview: I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming. I was just exhausted and stressed," Perry told Billboard magazine in an interview that was widely quoted this week.
"I'd prepped everyone that I was running late, but Barbara showed up at the original time anyway. When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me: 'You know, I've only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?' I was like: 'Oh, snap! Yes, bitch!'" Perry recalled. "I think it's the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me. I just couldn't tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview: 'Hey, my marriage [to comedian Russell Brand] is falling apart. Give me a break.'" Walters addressed Perry's remarks to Billboard on Tuesday's edition of her chat show "The View." "Katy, if I made you feel at all unhappy, during a time when you were obviously unhappy, and I didn't know, I'm sorry," Walters said. "But you can't always know!"

Janet Jackson considering adopting baby

U.S. pop star Janet Jackson and her husband, Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana, are considering adopting a child, UsMagazine.com reported. "She now pretty much knows pregnancy is not in the cards, so she's been looking into adopting," an insider told the magazine about the 47-year- old singer. "She's been very moved by the events in Jordan and Syria now that she's been living overseas. Not sure how soon it will happen, but there's been movement on this." "Janet has always been concerned about the welfare of the world's children, and it's important to her that she affords a baby the opportunities that have been afforded her," another source told the New York Post. Jackson and Al Mana began dating in the summer of 2010 and married several months ago.
