Here's the Scoop....

A special-effects laden opening ceremony welcomed the world
to the 2010 Winter Olympics. But amid the spectacle, a
fallen athlete was never far from everyone's minds.

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died early Friday during
a practice run when he lost control of his sled and crashed
over a safety railing into a steel beam. The remaining seven
members of his team decided to carry on with the competition
and were greeted with a standing ovation when they entered
BC Place Stadium.

The audience of 50,000 held a moment of silence just before
the Olympic flag was raised, and many of the nearly 2,600
competitors from 82 nations wore black arm bands in
Kumaritashvili's memory.

"When these bad accidents do happen they catch you so off
guard; never in a million years do you fathom something
like that could happen," said U.S. ice dancer Tanith Belbin.
"Hopefully we can come together and offer condolences and
support to his team and family."

24 Shooting Halts for Kiefer Sutherland's Surgery...

Kiefer Sutherland is having elective surgery to deal with a
ruptured cyst near one of his kidneys, temporarily stopping
production on his hit Fox show 24.

The medical problem is not considered serious, and the
disruption to 24 is expected to be brief.

"We are temporarily suspending production of 24 while our
friend and colleague Kiefer Sutherland undergoes a medical
procedure," the network says in a statement. "We hope to
resume production shortly and do not anticipate any
disruption in the broadcast of this season's episodes."

A rep for Kiefer says: "While Kiefer is frustrated to miss
even one day of work, he and FOX decided together that it
would be best to complete this minor elective procedure now
as a precaution as opposed to six weeks from now when
production wraps. He looks forward to returning to work
(this) week."

Barbara Walters Ending Oscar Special After 30 Years...

After this year, Barbara Walters will no longer host her annual
Oscar special.

"ABC has asked me to keep doing these specials as they have
been so successful, and I'm thrilled we have such great stars
and have such a wonderful show, but to be honest, I feel like
I've 'been there, done that,'" Barbara said on The View Monday.

Over the years hosting the ABC special, Barbara has
interviewed everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Miley Cyrus.

"This special has been a labor of love for 29 years. I will
always remember when Hugh Jackman gave me a private lap dance
or sitting down with the legendary Bette Davis or being taught
to tango by Al Pacino," Walters reminisced. "It's those
priceless moments that have made this special the Oscar
tradition that it has become, but I truly feel enough is enough."

Her last installment, to air the same night of the Oscars,
March 7, will include interviews with best actress nominee
Sandra Bullock and best supporting actress nominee Mo'Nique,
plus clips from her most memorable moments.

Barbara will continue taping her annual "10 Most Fascinating
People" special.

January earthquake.

Harrison flew his Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft to the Caribbean
country last weekend in support of Operation Smile, a charity
medical service organization.

He transported 20 volunteers, including surgeons, an anesthetist

Harrison says, "This is not about me, it is just about doing what
I can to help Operation Smile and the people of Haiti."

Harrison is not the only celebrity to lend his plane to the relief
effort, John Travolta flew a jet on two mercy missions to Haiti

*-*-* GUESS WHO *-*-*-

This actress often forgot her lines while shooting her upcoming
horror film, because she was so in awe of her co-star Sir
Anthony Hopkins...

It's Emily Blunt...

Emily became pals with the legendary Oscar-winner after he
invited her over to his trailer at the beginning of filming
for a dinner of baked potatoes.

But despite their friendly ways, Emily admits she couldn't
help but look on in wonder as he acted, much to the
detriment of her own performance.

She says, "He invited me over for baked potatoes topped with
baked beans and cheese to talk about our characters. So we
were pals.

"He's very cool. He's the best. I was riveted by him. I just
followed him around like a lovestruck teenager. I would sit
around and talk to him between takes and he'd tell us
wonderful stories. He is very wise, very open and incredibly
kind. He hasn't lost that childlike enthusiasm for creating
a part. He's quite an economical actor. It's masterful to
watch, and it's distracting. I'd watch him in the scene and
then think, 'Oh, [bleep]! I forgot my line.'"
