Bears sign linebacker Cato June to one-year deal

The Chicago Bears have signed linebacker Cato June to a
one-year contract. The deal was announced Tuesday. Terms
were not disclosed. June, a sixth-round draft pick by
Indianapolis in 2003, has 490 tackles and 12 interceptions
in 88 career games, including 73 starts in six seasons with
the Colts and Tampa Bay. The 2005 Pro Bowl selection has
appeared in eight playoff games with seven starts, including
all four at weakside linebacker during the Colts' run to the
Super Bowl title after the 2006 season. June spent part of the
2009 preseason with the Houston Texans before being placed on
the reserve/injured list on August 28. The Bears also
terminated the practice squad contract of defensive end
Joe Clermond Tuesday.

49ers lose Taylor for season with hip injury

Rookie safety Curtis Taylor's season is over for the San
Francisco 49ers. The team placed Taylor on injured reserve
Tuesday with a strained hip, which he injured after being hit
on punt coverage late in the first quarter of Sunday's 20-3
win over Jacksonville. San Francisco promoted fullback Brit
Miller from the practice squad to fill the roster spot.
Taylor, a seventh-round draft pick out of Louisiana State, had
one tackle in seven games and made eight stops on special teams.
The 49ers also signed receiver Rodney Wright to the practice
squad.

Colts waive 2 defensive players before Titans game

The Indianapolis Colts have waived defensive end Josh Thomas
and defensive back Anthony Madison. Both were waived Tuesday
after signing with the Colts to add depth to a defense hit
by several injuries. Thomas rejoined the team last week
when Indy wasn't sure if four-time Pro Bowl defensive end
Dwight Freeney could play with an abdominal injury at
Houston. Freeney sat out, and Thomas went into the
defensive line rotation. The move with Madison could indicate
that the Colts will get cornerback Kelvin Hayden back this
week. Madison was signed Nov. 11 after Hayden went down with
a sprained knee. The team has not said which knee Hayden
injured.

Roethlisberger expected to play against Raiders

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has worked out without
problems since missing Sunday night's game in Baltimore with
a concussion and is expected to play Sunday against Oakland.
Roethlisberger was held out of the 20-17 overtime loss to the
Ravens after having post-practice headaches Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday. A team doctor recommended Saturday that
the quarterback not play, and coach Mike Tomlin agreed. While
the Steelers did not practice on Monday, Roethlisberger worked
out on his own and did not have any problems, Tomlin said.
"All indications are he'll be a full participant tomorrow
(Wednesday) in practice and ultimately play in the game on
Sunday," Tomlin said Tuesday. If the headaches should
unexpectedly return, Tomlin said the Steelers will "act
quickly." The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback
sustained his fourth concussion since 2006 and his second
in less than a year during an overtime loss in Kansas City
on Nov. 22. Neither Roethlisberger nor the team revealed
during the week he was having headaches, one reason there
was considerable surprise when it was announced he wouldn't
play. "There are codes that come with playing tough games
like football that kind of conflict at times, with things
that are of utmost importance like head injuries," Tomlin
said. "I understand the gravity of the decision that we
had to make on Saturday, the potential of that. "I understand
that if we allowed Ben to play that we'd be open to questions
in regards to that. I thought that if we didn't allow Ben to
play, that we'd be open to questions in regards to that.
Really, it was irrelevant in terms of my decision making.
I was more concerned about doing what was right. Medical
experts suggested he not play, so we didn't play him."
Roethlisberger played the week after sustaining a concussion
against Atlanta in 2006, but had one of the worst games of
his career. He threw four interceptions - two for touchdowns -
during a 20-13 loss to Oakland, which won only one other game
all season.

Chiefs to retire Derrick Thomas' number

The late Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas will be the
10th player in Kansas City Chiefs history to have his number
retired. The Chiefs will retire No. 58 on Sunday during
halftime of their game with the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead
Stadium. Thomas had completed his 11th NFL season when he died
in February 2000 following a crash a month earlier. The nine-
time Pro Bowl selection had a franchise-record 126 1/2 career
sacks, including an NFL-record seven sacks in one game.
Thomas was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
August. Representatives of the Hall will make a special
presentation to the Thomas family Sunday.
