Study: Arctic climate at tipping point?

BOULDER, Colo. - Climate systems in the arctic may be more
affected by global warming than previously thought and may
be nearing a climate-change tipping point, a study says.
Although the arctic region has gone through periods in the
past when it was warmer than it is today, levels of atmos-
pheric carbon dioxide were only slightly higher than current
figures, a University of Colorado at Boulder study released
Wednesday says. Current global warming from greenhouse gases
generated by human activities could warm the arctic to levels
above the melting point of ice, the study said. Arctic temp-
eratures have risen by about 1.8 degrees F in the past 20
years in response to greenhouse warming, a trend expected to
continue in the coming centuries, the international study
led by UC reported. "As temperatures approach 0 degrees
Celsius, it becomes exceedingly difficult to maintain perm-
anent sea and glacial ice in the arctic," the study said.
"Thus current levels of CO2 in the atmosphere of approxi-
mately 390 parts per million may be approaching a tipping
point for irreversible ice-free conditions in the arctic."

'Forensic' cellphone tools needed

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Cellphones can provide valuable clues
for solving crimes but the technology is complex and the
current tools limited, U.S. experts say. Data stored in a
cellphone or other mobile device could be useful to law
enforcement, but forensic tools to recover such data at the
crime scene are only slowly becoming available, IEEE Spectrum
magazine reports. Most currently available tools are off-
shoots of consumer products designed to allow phone users
to transfer photos, address books, ring tones and other
stored information from an old phone to a new one or to a
personal computer, the magazine said. And while dedicated
technologies are being developed, each new generation of
cellphones brings new services, new features and sometime
completely new operating systems. With developers of forensic
tools struggling to keep up, most crime investigators still
have to wait for results to come back from specialist labs,
the magazine said.

Common dyes could create solar cells

ITHACA, N.Y. - Cheaper, flexible and versatile solar cells
could be made utilizing a molecule found in dyes used to
color blue jeans and pen ink, U.S. researchers say. Current
heavy silicon-based panel are effective but are costly and
often heavy, leading scientists to look for other alternat-
ives, a Cornell University release said Tuesday. Two Cornell
chemists have discovered that organic dye molecules could be
assembled into a structure known as a covalent organic frame-
work to help create thin, flexible and low-cost photovoltaic
devices, the release said. William Dichtel and Eric L. -
Spitler used an acid catalyst and stable molecules called
protected catechols to bring organic molecules together into
two-dimensional sheets that were stacked together to create
a lattice. At the core of the framework are molecules called
phthalocyanines, a class of common industrial dyes used in
products from blue jeans to ink pens. The structure by it-
self is not a solar cell, the researchers say, but once the
framework is assembled, the pores between the molecular
latticework could be filled with another organic material
to form a light, flexible, highly efficient and easy-to-
manufacture solar cell.

Scientists dispel oil rig disaster myths

WASHINGTON - U.S. scientists say worst-case scenarios circu-
lating on the Internet about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill
have little scientific basis. Web sites are awash with dis-
aster predictions like collapsing sea beds, oily rain or
oil-contaminated seafood, the Christian Science Monitor
reported Thursday. One scenario has the earth around the
wellhead sinking and cracking, creating gushers that would
never stop or giant exploding methane gas bubbles, events
scientists say can't happen. "The idea that there could be
a catastrophic cave in, or a methane gas explosion, that's
not a reasonable worry," said Gary Byerly, a professor of
geology at Louisiana State University. "The rock formations
on top of this oil deposit have enough strength that nothing
like that is going to happen." Byerly admits that oil and
gas do leak from natural cracks in the gulf floor. "That has
been going on for tens of thousands of years, and petroleum
and natural gas will find any kind of fault to come to the
surface," he said. A recent YouTube video purportedly showing
oily rain falling in a New Orleans suburb has also been de-
bunked by scientists. "I don't think what is supposedly shown
in the video could happen," said Alberto Mestas-Nunez, a
professor of oceanography at Texas A&M University. "Oil is a
complex mixture of hydrocarbons, and I don't see how these
separate components could evaporate and then recombine in
the atmosphere and come down as something like oil." Re-
garding contaminated seafood, experts note that much of the
seafood sold in the United States is imported or comes from
Alaska, and multiple inspection systems ensure that gulf
seafood is being caught in clean water.
