Redskins TE Cooley might be back in 4 weeks
There's a chance Chris Cooley will be back this season
after all. The Washington Redskins say their two-time Pro
Bowl tight end will have surgery Wednesday on his broken
ankle. If the procedure goes well, Cooley might not be
placed on injured reserve. Cooley gave his own update via
Twitter, saying: "3 pins go in the ankle tomorrow. Hopefully
be back in 4 weeks. Thanks for all the support." Coach Jim
Zorn had said earlier Monday that Cooley would be sidelined
a minimum of six to eight weeks and was probably headed for
IR. But that was before the tight end saw another doctor
for a second opinion.
LB Kershaw signs with Dolphins
Linebacker William Kershaw has signed with the Miami Dolphins,
who placed cornerback Will Allen on injured reserve with a left
knee injury. Kershaw was in training camp with the Dolphins
and released before the regular season. He spent two weeks
on Miami's active roster in 2008 and played in one game. He
also spent time with the Chiefs, Texans and Eagles. The moves
were made Tuesday. Allen suffered a season-ending injury in
Sunday's loss to New Orleans.

Falcons sign RB Stecker, place Moore on IR
Former Saints running back Aaron Stecker has been signed by
the Atlanta Falcons ahead of Monday night's game in New
Orleans. The Falcons were without fullback Ovie Mughelli and
backup running back Jerious Norwood due to injuries in Sunday's
loss at Dallas. Stecker played nine seasons in the NFL,
including five seasons with New Orleans from 2004-08. The Falcons
also placed rookie safety William Moore, a second-round pick
from Missouri, on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Cornerback Glenn Sharpe was put on the practice squad-injured
list safety Eric Brock was signed to the practice squad.
Jets re-sign CB-KR Justin Miller
The New York Jets have re-signed cornerback-kick returner
Justin Miller, acquiring a replacement for the injured Leon
Washington on special teams. Miller was a second-round draft
pick of the Jets in 2005, and made the 2007 Pro Bowl season
after leading the AFC with a 30.1-yard average and two
touchdowns on kickoffs. He was waived by the Jets last
season and signed with Oakland, which re-signed him for
one game before releasing him Nov. 11. Miller has a 26.2
career kickoff return average, and five returns for scores.
Washington, a Pro Bowl returner last season, was placed on
injured reserve after breaking his right leg Sunday in the
Jets' win at Oakland. He replaced an injured Miller as the
primary returner in 2007.

49ers lose Pashos for season
The San Francisco 49ers took a big blow to their already
struggling offensive line Tuesday, losing right tackle Tony
Pashos for the season with a broken left shoulder blade.
The 49ers placed Pashos on injured reserve a day after he
had an MRI exam on the shoulder. The veteran offensive lineman
was hurt during Sunday's 24-21 loss at Houston, his first start
at right tackle in place of Adam Snyder. Coach Mike Singletary
had hoped making Pashos the regular right tackle would help
improve things on the line, where blocking and quarterback
protection has been a problem. Pashos had been sharing right
tackle duties with Snyder, who moved into a shared role at
right guard with Chilo Rachal. Singletary has called the line
his biggest concern. San Francisco (3-3) plays at Indianapolis
on Sunday with newly promoted quarterback Alex Smith set to
start. The 49ers have lost two in a row following a 3-1 start.
Linebacker Takeo Spikes is nursing a strained right shoulder
and was listed as day to day after undergoing an MRI on Monday.
When Singletary addressed the media Monday, he didn't want to
speculate about how the line would look come Sunday if Pashos
was out. But moving Snyder back to right tackle and keeping
Rachal at right guard seems like the most logical move. "Right
now, we have to continue to help Chilo as much as we can,"
Singletary said. "I think one of the issues we have right
now, some guys are really trying to play perfect. Some guys
are really trying to play mistake-free. When you do that, you
become robotic and it takes you out of your game. I just want
guys to go out and play." The 29-year-old Pashos, a seventh-
year veteran, signed with San Francisco on Sept. 7 after being
cut by the Jaguars. He played two seasons with the Jaguars
after spending his first four years in the NFL with Baltimore.
In addition Tuesday, the Niners released linebacker Marques
Harris and promoted linebacker Diyral Briggs from the practice
squad to the active roster.

Broncos WR Marshall to fill in as TV host
Brandon Marshall is moonlighting as a television host for
a week. The Denver Broncos Pro Bowl wide receiver will fill
in on "Sports Soup" on Versus next Tuesday night. The show
compiles funny and eye-popping clips from around the sports
world. Marshall said he was looking for opportunities in TV
to introduce fans to a different side of him. "I think it's
always fun to be able to joke about something that you do,"
he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday.
Marshall even plans to poke fun at the training camp tantrum
that drew him a nine-day suspension. He's done some sports
broadcasting in the past but said that probably won't prepare
him for his hosting gig, which Marshall will shoot next
Tuesday morning. At least he's familiar with the show -
Marshall said he's a fan and has watched plenty of episodes.
Marshall has 29 catches for 332 yards and four touchdowns for
the undefeated Broncos this season.
