Ravens, Ryan, Shula and More...

Rex Ryan apologizes for gesture

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan apologized Sunday for making
an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event. Ryan was
booed Saturday night while doing a TV interview at the MMA
event in the Bank Atlantic Center, the Florida Panthers'
home arena. He was smiling when caught making the gesture
by a cell phone camera.

"It was stupid and inappropriate," Ryan said. "I wouldn't
accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or
players and it's unacceptable from me. I apologize to the
Jets organization, the National Football League and NFL
fans everywhere."

Ryan led the Jets to the AFC championship game after they
went 9-7 during the season to earn a wild card in his first
year as an NFL head coach. He made headlines with his
confident statements, including saying the Jets should be
the favorite to win the Super Bowl when the playoffs began.

He previously had a verbal feud with Miami linebacker
Channing Crowder, and deep in Dolphins territory, he was a
likely target for boos. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum
added the organization will address the matter internally.
"Rex showed extremely poor judgment and his conduct was
inappropriate. He knows he was wrong, has apologized and
we have accepted his apology," Tannenbaum said in a statement.

Ryan could be subject to a league fine under the NFL's
personal conduct policy.

New statue and NFL award in honor of Shula

In tribute to Don Shula, the Miami Dolphins have a new statue
and address, and the NFL has a new award. The statue of Shula
in front of the Dolphins' new stadium offices was unveiled
before Sunday's Pro Bowl. The Dolphins announced the address
of the offices will be 347 Don Shula Drive, in recognition
of his NFL-record 347 victories. NFL commissioner
Roger Goodell announced the creation of an annual Coach
Shula Award, which will honor a coach at any level who
displays the integrity, achievement and positive impact on
others exemplified by Shula. "I'm honored. I'm humbled," Shula
said. "I thank my players for the things we were able to
accomplish."

The 11-foot-tall statue shows Shula pumping a fist as he rides
the shoulders of two of his players, replicating the celebration
after the 1972 Dolphins won the Super Bowl to complete the
league's only perfect season. "He's waving like, 'I did this
thing all by myself,"' joked Bob Griese, the Dolphins'
quarterback in that game.

Griese was among about 20 former players attending the ceremony.
The last to arrive was Dan Marino, who was 45 minutes late.
"Marino will be fined," Shula said. Other speakers included
team owner Stephen Ross, who called Shula "the soul of the
franchise," and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano. Even Florida
Gov. Charlie Crist joined in listing Shula's accomplishments.

"He's got restaurants, too, in case you didn't know," Crist said.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame coach, famous for his jutting jaw,
said he had only one complaint about the statue.
"The chin is too long," Shula said. "My chin is a lot shorter."=

As for the new stadium address, he said: "I like that. It's
going to be easy for me to remember how to get here."

Former Redskins coach Zorn lands with Ravens as QBs coach

The Baltimore Ravens hired former Washington Redskins coach
Jim Zorn on Saturday to tutor their quarterbacks, replacing
Hue Jackson, who took the Oakland Raiders' offensive
coordinator job earlier in the week.

Jim Zorn was the Redskins' coach for the last two seasons and
worked with QB Jason Campbell. Zorn told the Ravens' official
Web site that he's looking forward to meeting starter
Joe Flacco and working with him.

"I've got all kinds of methods and ways, but I've got to
learn who Joe is and what I can help him with," Zorn said.
"What I see in watching Joe is that he's got some great,
natural talent, and he uses it. I don't know enough about
him yet to see where I can help him, but that will come.
I haven't even walked in the door yet."

Flacco has started every game in his two-year NFL career and
passed for 6,584 yards and 35 touchdowns with 24 interceptions.
The Ravens also reached the playoffs in both seasons.
Zorn, who was fired by the Redskins earlier this month, knows
a lot about being a quarterback in the NFL. He threw for
21,115 yards and 111 touchdowns with 141 interceptions in
11 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks (1976-84), Green Bay
Packers (1985) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1987). He then
coached the position for 10 seasons with the Detroit
Lions (1998-2000) and the Seahawks (1997, 2001-07) and
helped quarterbacks such as Charlie Batch and Matt Hasselbeck
develop.

"Jim played successfully in the NFL for a long time," Ravens
coach John Harbaugh said. "He knows what quarterbacks go
through in this league. He has been a quarterbacks coach and
a head coach, and he is familiar with our offense. That's a
great resume. "I've gotten to know Jim for the last couple
of years, and I have been impressed with him as a person.
He's a good, decent man, and he will be an excellent
addition to the Ravens. This is an exciting addition to
our staff."

Panthers DE Peppers says he could play anywhere next season

The Pro Bowl means a $1.5 million bonus for Julius Peppers,
tiding him over until the next paycheck. He says he has no
idea who will be writing it.

"Anywhere is a potential landing spot," the Carolina Panthers'
defensive end said following the NFC all-stars' final practice
Saturday. "I'm not going to say I want to play for any team or
I prefer to play anywhere because I really haven't thought
about it. I haven't thought about playing for X, Y or Z."

Last year, the Panthers gave Peppers the NFL's highest
single-season salary of more than $1 million per game. The
contract included a $1.5 million bonus for making the Pro Bowl.
The deal came after the Panthers placed the restrictive franchise
tag on Peppers, denying him his wish to leave in free agency.

Carolina could restrict Peppers' movement by placing the
franchise tag on him again, but that would come with a 20
percent raise, meaning a salary of more than $20 million.
The Panthers haven't said what their plans are. Peppers, who
rarely talked to reporters this season, shed little light on
his status Saturday. Is he waiting for an offer from Carolina?

"I really have no idea what's going on," he said. Would he
prefer to remain with the Panthers? "I don't have a preference,"
he said. How would he feel about switching to linebacker for
a team that plays a 3-4 defense? "I'm just trying to get on a
team right now," Peppers said. "I just want to get a contract."

Peppers, who turned 30 this month, has spent his entire
eight-year NFL career with the Panthers. He had 10.5 sacks,
two interceptions and five forced fumbles this season.
