QUOTE A DAY - June 19, 2012

Greetings fellow quote lovers:

I want to apologize because I found out the email address to contact me was not working. This means I could not answer any of you who may have emailed me about using my own quotations. I know it is a bit self-indulgent and if I get a lot of complaints, I will discontinue...otherwise you will be force-fed some more of my thoughts for a couple of weeks :-)

My email has been fixed, so let me know what you think.

Best,
JA

*---- Quotes For The Week ----*

Google's finances will eventually follow its attitude. One can see Google further alienating publishers to maintain their lofty profits. One can also see Google further alienating its audience while pursuing an "all knowing" algorithm. In the end, it is the attitude or Gestalt of a company that defines it. In Google's case, this attitude boils down to the existential difference between a self-serving pledge to Do No Evil and the simple promise to Do Only Good.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Has Google's Empire Past its Zenith?'

If we don't recognize and embrace failure, we'll be condemned to repeat it over and over. Case in point: Our government budgeting process is a failed enterprise, but until those responsible acknowledge its failure, we will remain saddled with the same flawed premises and failed processes that got us here.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Failure and Innovation'

It may be the case that the drive for ever increasing profit margins works to increase fragility. What do I mean? Increasing profit margins usually requires more and more efficiencies...more optimization. This means less "slack" in a system. Less redundancies. This is when a company is in peril that may not be immediately apparent. A company's fragility often remains hidden until a black swan shows up at its doorstep.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Efficiency and Fragility'

Those that misplace their faith in data and technology are like religious fundamentalists. They seek comfort and succor from empty ritual that neither inspires nor sustains our dreams.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Dreams of the Heart'

Driving in the rear view mirror will ALWAYS...let me repeat...ALWAYS lead to a crash. It's true for driving a bus, driving financial trading, or driving marketing. An occasional glance in the rear view mirror is a good idea. But it's no way to get us safely where we want and need to be.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Driving in the Rear View Mirror'
