QUOTE A DAY - June 12, 2012

Greetings fellow quote lovers:

For the next couple of weeks, I will be doing something I have never done...exclusively using quotations from articles I have written over the past few years (except mystery quote).

The quotes will be a mixture of business, media, inspirational and observations I have made. I will include the title of the article if any wish to Google the article to read in its entirety.

This is a bit self-indulgent, but I have been doing this a long time and felt the need to share not just other's words...but my own. I hope you enjoy this window into what has animated me over the years.

Best,
JA

*---- Quotes For The Week ----*

Centralization and efficiency are the rationalized twins of
large systems. They go hand in hand. When things are going well, the benefits are easy to see. But when the black swan comes calling, the costs are disastrous for the system.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Efficiency and Fragility'

...it has been a long journey from blind faith in the numbers and science of what is to the far grander vision and art of what could be.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Dreams of the Heart'

Today's marketers are not marketing...they're too busy dodging customers in the rear view mirror to see the prospects in the road dead ahead. Once upon a time, marketing was all about the art of selling. But art has given way to specious science promulgated by irrational "experts" who chase the folly of prediction, seemingly impervious to the existential flies in the ointment. They strive to be like Nostradamus when they'd be better served to emulate David Ogilvy.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Can Marketers Really Predict Human Behavior?'

All the lipstick in the world can't make behavioral targeting any less porcine.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'Behavioral Targeting, Putting Lipstick on a Pig'

The present media ecosystem is dysfunctional. We all know that advertisers subsidize the ecosystem. But the ecosystem has become so unwieldy, things have gone terribly wrong. The basic problem is that the relationship between audiences and advertiser has fundamentally eroded.
--Jaffer Ali, from 'After the Last Sky'
