There are a lot of people who love to be tan. They will use lotions, sprays, tanning beds, and the nature sun to achieve their perfect (or sometimes not so perfect) tans. Summer is finally coming, and of course, we all want to look our best in tank top and bathing suit weather! Sunless tanning has become quite a phenomenon recently. Here are some pros and cons to consider when deciding on using sunless tanning.

Pros:

-By using spray tan (or lotions) instead of tanning beds, you do reduce the risk of skin cancer. However, that's only if you're still using a broad-spectrum sunscreen and still taking shade when possible!
-Spray tanning and tanning lotions are instant! You won't waste hours in the sun, or bake in a box to get the look you want. You can also control how dark you go by applying more or less!
-With spray tanning and tanning lotions your skin will retain the moisture that would normally not be there when you use a tanning bed. That in turn, makes your skin look younger and not like leather.

Cons:

-Obviously, there are people who are going to tan. But a few of the downsides that some people might find with sunless tanning, depending on the type of person you are is that with sunless tanning, it doesn't last as long as a tanning bed or the actual sun.
-Also, if you put on too much lotion or too much spray, you can end up turning your skin orange or too dark of a shade of tan for your bone structure, making you look not of your nationality.
-There is really only one big con of spray tanning and tanning lotions that I could find in my research that would apply to all people. Even though they do decrease your risk of cancer, there is still a risk of cancer. With spray tans, they still contain DHA (Dihdroxyacetone), which is the active ingredient in the spray tanners. Medical Experts say that when introduced to the bloodstream (which can happen with inhalation), it has the potential to cause genetic alterations and DNA damage.

No matter what way you tan, whether with the help of these lotions or sprays, with a tanning bed, or with the natural sunlight, always make sure to be protected and stay covered as much as you can while in the sun for prolonged periods of time!
