*-- Single women a factor in Obama results --*

WASHINGTON, - Single women may be decisive in the presidential election, so President Obama's campaign is showering them with attention to make sure they vote, observers say.

Unmarried women usually vote Democratic, particularly those ages 18 to 29, but in 2010 turnout by single women dropped more than any other group, The New York Times reported. Consequently, women checked Republican boxes more than they had in 30 years.

To pull them back into the voting booth, the Obama campaign is focusing on such issues as Republican Mitt Romney's views on health and contraception.

A recent New York Times/CBS News poll said single women favored Obama over Romney by 29 percentage points, but they cared less about the election and more about making ends meet.

The jobless rate for single women -- 11 percent -- is double that of married women, and their reliance on assistance programs such as food stamps and Medicaid has grown since 2007, the year before Obama took office.

Some Republicans believe the typical issues viewed as important to single women, such as abortion rights and equal pay, will fade over concerns about the economy, the Times said.
