WASHINGTON (UPI) - Nearly three years after an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens, U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated Peter Bodde to be the next state official to fill the position.
Bodde, the U.S. ambassador to Nepal since 2012, was among a number of State and Defense department nominations announced by Obama. Should he be confirmed, he would replace Ambassador Deborah Jones, who is currently based out of Malta after the embassy in Tripoli was evacuated last year.
Bodde has held several positions within the State Department, including ambassador to Malawi from 2008 to 2010, and assistant chief of mission for assistance transition at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. He's also served in Pakistan, Germany, India, Denmark, Bulgaria and Guyana.
His confirmation hearings are expected to come at a time when the attack on the consulate in Benghazi is coming under review by the House Select Committee on Benghazi. The committee is currently poring over thousands of pages of emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who kept work emails during the time of the attack on her personal server.
In addition to Bodde, Obama three other State Department nominates Tuesday, including: Catherine Ebert-Gray as ambassador to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Republic of Vanuatu; Dennis Hankins as ambassador to the Republic of Guinea; and Elisabeth Millard as ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan.
In the Defense Department, Obama nominated Brad Carson as under secretary for defense for personnel and readiness in the Department of Defense
"I am grateful that these talented and dedicated individuals have agreed to take on these important roles and devote their talents to serving the American people. I look forward to working with them," Obama said.
