****-- Obama: 'These tragedies must end' --*NEWTOWN, Conn. - President Barack Obama vowed to "use whatever power this office holds" to stop massacres like the one in Newtown, Conn., as that town prepared to bury its dead.
"No single law, no set of laws, can eliminate evil from the world -- but that can't be an excuse for inaction," Obama told a multifaith memorial service at Newtown High School, near the elementary school where 20 young children and six adult staff members were killed Friday by 20-year-old Adam Lanza after he killed his mother at their home. Lanza then killed himself.
"Surely, we can do better than this," he told the packed auditorium in an address carried live on national television.
"In the coming weeks, I will use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens -- from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators -- in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this," Obama said.
"Because what choice do we have? We can't accept events like this as routine," he said. "Are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage? That the politics are too hard? Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom?"
He added: "We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change."
Obama concluded his 19-minute remarks with a biblical reference. "'Let the little children come to me,' Jesus said, 'and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven,'" Obama said, citing Matthew 19:14 in the New Testament.
He then slowly read the names of the children killed at the elementary school.
