*-- Equal pay for women becomes issue in Texas campaign --*

AUSTIN, Texas - Beth Cubriel, executive director of the Republican Party of Texas, agrees with other party leaders that women do not need a stronger pay equity law.

"Men are better negotiators. I would encourage women instead of pursuing the courts for action to become better negotiators," Cubriel said Monday in an interview with YNN Austin.

Also Monday, Cari Christman, head of the RedState Women PAC, told WFAA-TV, Dallas, women in Texas "want and deserve" equal pay. But she said legislation is not the way to do it, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Christman also suggested women have "a lot to juggle," making them too busy to go to court.

Gregg Abbott, the state attorney general and Republican gubernatorial candidate, refused to say last week whether he would veto an equal pay law, following Gov. Rick Perry's example. The law Perry vetoed was sponsored by state Sen. Wendy Davis, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate.

"Here's a news flash for Greg Abbott: Women aren't too 'busy' to fight for economic fairness for all hard-working Texans," Rebecca Acuna, a Davis spokeswoman, said Monday.
