Cowboys' Newman added to NFC Pro Bowl team, Gurode pulls out

Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman has been added to NFC Pro
Bowl team, while center Andre Gurode has been removed from
the roster due to a knee injury. The Cowboys announced
Wednesday that Newman was added Wednesday as a backup in
place of Arizona's Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who sprained
his left knee in the Cardinals' playoff loss at New Orleans
last weekend. It will be the second Pro Bowl for Newman, who
had three interceptions this season and recorded a career-
high 21 pass deflections and three forced fumbles. The New
Orleans Saints announced Wednesday center Jonathan Goodwin
had been added to the NFC roster, replacing Gurode. According
to the team's official blog, Gurode is expected to have
arthroscopic knee surgery soon. Gurode is a three-time
Pro Bowler who was named the NFC starter last season.
The Cowboys will now have six Pro Bowl participants.

Steelers bring in Everest as special teams coordinator

Al Everest has been hired as the Pittsburgh Steelers' special
teams coordinator after being let go by the San Francisco 49ers.
Everest has been an NFL special teams coach for 13 seasons with
the Cardinals (1996-99), Saints (2000-05) and 49ers (2007-09).
In 2002, the Saints had three kickoff return touchdowns and
blocked five kicks. Everest replaces Bob Ligashesky, who was
fired after three seasons. The Steelers allowed an NFL-high
four kickoff return touchdowns this season, all in a five-
game span, and were among the NFL's worst teams in kickoff
and punt return coverage. Everest is a former pro football
coach in Italy and was the baseball coach at U.S.
International University. He played safety for SMU in 1970-71.

Schaub, Giants' Smith to replace Brady, Fitzgerald in 2010 Pro Bowl

Tom Brady has pulled out of the Pro Bowl after a season in
which he played with rib and finger injuries. He has been
replaced by Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub. The New
York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith will also replace
Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, who will also miss the game due
to injury. The NFL announced the changes on Wednesday. Brady
and the rest of the New England Patriots had physicals after
their 33-14 opening-round playoff loss to Baltimore on Jan. 10.
Schaub, Giants' Smith to replace Brady, Fitzgerald in 2010
Pro Bowl Brady played in all 16 regular-season games and
completed 371 of 565 passes for 4,398 yards, 28 touchdowns
and 13 interceptions. His completion percentage of 65.7 was
seventh in the NFL and his passer rating of 96.2 was ninth.
Schaub, selected to his first Pro Bowl, completed 396 of 583
passes for 4,770 yards, all the most in the NFL. He ranked
fourth with a 67.9 completion percentage and seventh with a
98.6 passer rating. He threw for 29 touchdowns, including the
game-winner in Houston's 34-27 victory over New England in
the final regular-season game, and 15 interceptions
Smith led the NFC and shattered the Giants' single-season
record with 107 catches in 2009, and his 1,220 receiving
yards were the second-highest total in club history.
"I'm really excited about playing in the Pro Bowl," Smith
said. "It's truly an honor to be recognized by the fans,
coaches and players as one of the best in the league. I
realize how significant it is at the position I play, by
being the first Giants wide receiver to be named to the
Pro Bowl in such a long time. I plan to represent my
teammates, my coaches and the entire Giants organization
well, because I know I would not have made it without their
support." Brady was chosen for his fifth Pro Bowl but
withdrew for the second consecutive time. Patriots wide
receiver Wes Welker, who suffered a serious knee injury
in the regular-season finale at Houston, was also voted
to the AFC roster and initially was replaced by teammate
Randy Moss. Then Moss withdrew with an injury and was
replaced by Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco.

Panthers RB Stewart says he's undergoing foot surgery

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart is undergoing
surgery on his troublesome left foot. Stewart posted on his
Twitter account early Wednesday that he was having surgery
later in the day. It comes after chronic pain in his toe and
left Achilles' tendon kept him out of numerous practices in
2009. He tweaked the injury in the season finale against
New Orleans and was knocked out of the game. Stewart played
all 16 games and rushed for a team-best 1,133 yards and 10
touchdowns. Stewart and DeAngelo Williams combined to become
the first set of teammates since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger to
each rush for over 1,100 yards.
