Cowboys LB Ware not ruled out with neck strain

-Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware could play Saturday
night despite sustaining a neck injury from a scary collision.
"He's actually a lot better today," coach Wade Phillips said
Monday. "He's really in a day-to-day situation as far as where
he's going to be as far as being able to play. ... He took
quite a hit, but has really bounced back strong. That's
encouraging for him and us." Phillips described the injury
as a neck strain. Ware spent several hours in the hospital
Sunday after he was hurt in the fourth quarter of a 20-17
loss to the San Diego Chargers. Phillips said the linebacker
went home that night. Backup safety and special teams player
Pat Watkins sprained his left knee on a kickoff return Sunday
and will be out at least two weeks. Philips also said tight
end Martellus Bennett has not been cleared to play after
experiencing concussion-like symptoms that kept him out
Sunday. Bennett will not play Saturday night at undefeated
New Orleans. The Cowboys are 8-5 and have dropped a game behind
Philadelphia in the NFC East. Ware was hurt while pursing
quarterback Philip Rivers. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker
got around another offensive lineman and then went headfirst
into the upper leg of lineman Brandyn Dombrowki. Ware remained
on the ground for several anxious minutes, then was immobilized
and strapped to a stretcher before being taken off the field.
In October, Ware agreed to a $78 million, six-year contract
extension through the 2015 season that included a $20 million
signing bonus. The 27-year-old was in the final year of the
contract he signed after being selected with the 11th overall
pick in the 2005 draft.

Eagles' Jackson ties NFL record for long TDs

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson tied an NFL
record for touchdowns of 50 yards or more in a season when he
scored his seventh and eighth of the season in a game against
the New York Giants on Sunday night. Jackson scored on a
72-yard punt return in the second quarter and caught a
60-yard touchdown pass in the third to tie the mark shared
by Elroy Hirsch and Devin Hester.

Belichick says he has a lot of respect for Moss

Patriots coach Bill Belichick is defending Randy Moss against
comments that the wide receiver doesn't go all out on the field.
Belichick said Monday he has a lot of respect for Moss and
dismissed the criticism as coming from two players who had
just lost another game. Panthers defensive backs Chris
Gamble and Chris Harris made the remarks after New England's
20-10 win Sunday that dropped Carolina to 5-8. The Patriots
are 8-5. Moss was held to one catch for 16 yards and lost
a fumble on that play. He also appeared not to break hard
for a pass that was intercepted by Gamble. But Belichick
said Moss is one of the Patriots best and most consistent
players.

Dallas-Washington to remain Sunday night game

The Dallas-Washington matchup Dec. 27 will remain the NFL's
Sunday night game even though NBC had the option to choose
another one. The league said Monday that the Denver-Philadelphia
game that day will start at 4:15 p.m. EST instead of 1 p.m.
The league's flexible scheduling policy allows it to change
the Sunday night game to select a better matchup starting in
Week 11. The game could have major playoff implications for
the Cowboys, who are 8-5 before playing at the undefeated
Saints on Saturday. The Redskins are 4-9.

Saints QB Brees chosen as King of Bacchus for 2010 parade

Saints quarterback Drew Brees soon will preside over a new
krewe. Brees -- already considered royalty by many in this
football-crazed city -- has been named King of Bacchus.
Brees made the announcement via Twitter on Saturday. It was
later confirmed by the Krewe Bacchus, known for its celebrity
kings. The Bacchus parade is set to roll Feb. 14, two days
before Mardi Gras and one week after the Super Bowl. With
the Saints 12-0 heading into Sunday's game with the Atlanta
Falcons, New Orleans fans have high hopes their team will
make it to the championship game.

Falcons DT Babineaux says he's not guilty of felony drug charge

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux insists
that he will be cleared of a felony marijuana charge, saying
in a statement that he and his family "have faith that you will
see I'm not guilty." Babineaux was arrested during a traffic
stop Thursday night and charged with possession of 1½ ounces
of marijuana. Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. David
Schiralli has said that Babineaux and another man, Aaron
Robinson, were driving in the player's 2005 Cadillac Escalade
when police pulled them over. Falcons coach Mike Smith said
he doesn't expect the arrest to be a distraction for Sunday's
game against the New Orleans Saints and declined to say if
Babineaux would play. Babineaux is listed as questionable
because of a shoulder injury that limited him in practice
Thursday and Friday.
