E! News apologizes for Michael J. Fox illness 'fun fact'

Hollywood's E! News has apologized for its much-criticized Golden Globes "fun fact" screen crawler about Michael J. Fox's diagnosis with Parkinson's disease. The blurb appeared on television screens when Fox was interviewed on the Globes red carpet during the cable network's pre-show coverage Sunday. Under the heading of "fun fact," the message said, "Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991." After fans criticized the message, E! News issued an apology to the Hollywood Reporter. "We regret the insensitive classification of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's diagnosis during our Eonline [sic] live stream," the statement said. "We understand the serious nature of the disease and sincerely apologize."


Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross get engaged

U.S. singer Ashlee Simpson confirmed via Twitter Monday she is engaged to actor-musician Evan Ross, the son of pop music star Diana Ross. "My baby love and I are ENGAGED!!! hallelujah Hawaii!!!" Simpson, 29, tweeted. "The love of my life said YES!!!!!!" Ross, 25, said in his own Twitter message. People.com said the couple went public with their relationship last summer. They did not say when they plan to tie the knot. Simpson has a 5-year-old son from her previous marriage to Fall Out Boy front man Pete Wentz.

Michael Douglas to play scientist Hank Pym in 'Ant-Man' movie

Hollywood actor Michael Douglas is to play scientist Hank Pym in the film version of "Ant-Man," Marvel Studios announced Monday. Edgar Wright is to direct the movie with Paul Rudd set to play the title character. "With Hank Pym's rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Variety Monday. "We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn't be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life." Douglas won a Golden Globe Award Sunday night for his portrayal of flamboyant music icon Liberace in the TV movie "Behind the Candelabra."


'Octomom' allegedly lied on welfare application

Los Angeles prosecutors said Monday Nadya Suleman, who became known as Octomom after giving birth to octuplets, lied on her welfare application. The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office said Suleman, 38, was recently charged with one count of aid by misrepresentation and two counts of perjury by false application for aid. She allegedly didn't disclose nearly $30,000 in earnings when she applied for welfare last year, the Los Angeles Times reported. Suleman, an unemployed single mother with six other children, could receive years in prison if convicted, the newspaper said. She is to be arraigned Friday. Prosecutors are expected to request her bail be set at $25,000, the Times said.

Red Hot Chili Peppers to perform during Super Bowl show

Bruno Mars has invited the rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him during next month's Super Bowl halftime show in New Jersey, the NFL announced. The professional football championship game is to be played Feb. 2 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. "The Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show is the most-watched musical event of the year," the NFL said in a news release Saturday. "More than 110.5 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year's show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide. Bruno Mars joins an esteemed list of recent halftime acts that includes Beyonce, Madonna, The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2."
