Cowboys Stadium will host next season's Super Bowl

The Dallas area will host its first Super Bowl when Super
Bowl XLV will be played at new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington
on Feb. 6, 2011. Overall, this will be the third Super Bowl
held in the state of Texas, as Houston hosted Super Bowl VIII
at Rice Stadium in 1974 and Super Bowl XXXVIII at Reliant
Stadium in 2004. With a capacity expandable to 110,000, new
Cowboys Stadium will be the largest to host a Super Bowl
since the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. hosted 98,374 fans
for Super Bowl XXVII. In addition to hosting Super Bowl XLV,
Cowboys Stadium will host the 2009 and 2010 Big 12
championship games, the Cotton Bowl, the 2010 NBA All-Star
Game and the 2014 men's Final Four.

one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters that
represent the American Football Conference and National
Football Conference in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and
coaches will cast their votes on December 22-23.
The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting

NFL Charities awards $1.5 million in sports medical research
grants

NFL Charities, the charitable foundation of the National
Football League, has awarded $1.5 million in grants to
support sports-related medical research at 11 organizations,
the NFL announced Tuesday. The NFL has long supported
sports-related medical research through NFL Charities
Medical Research Grants. Since 2000, NFL Charities has
committed more than $20 million in grants to medical
facilities nationwide to address issues including studies
on mild traumatic brain injury, ACL injury prevention and
heat stress risks. Overall, the NFL has spent more than
$5 million to research concussions and other brain injuries
during the past decade, including the NFL Charities grants
in this area. A four-member panel of medical experts
evaluates and recommends grantees each year that must be
approved by the NFL Charities board. This year's grants
include studies on knee biomechanics, artery blockage in
retired players and stem cell usage for tendon repair.
"NFL Charities Medical Research Grants strive to make
the game of football and all athletics safer by supporting
a broad range of the best sports-related medical research
proposals," said Vanderbilt University Head Team Physician
Dr. Kurt Spindler, who is the chairman of the NFL Medical
Grant Committee. "The goal is to look at some of the many
risk factors that exist not only for football players,
but in all athletics." This year's NFL Charities grants
include a $124,000 grant to the University of South Florida
towards a study on heat stress risks. "This grant from
NFL Charities means more than just another funded research
project to us. It means we are one step closer to being
able to protect youth, collegiate and professional
athletes who participate in sports in the heat," added
Dr. Eric Coris, Associate Professor, Director of Primary
Care Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida.
NFL Charities granted $80,000 to Washington University
School of Medicine in St. Louis for a study on ACL injuries.
"The award from NFL Charities this year is especially
meaningful as it helps to further the work of the MARS
(Multi-center ACL Revision Study) group, which is an 87
surgeon multicenter trial," said Dr. Rick Wright, Principal
Investigator at the Washington University School of Medicine
in St. Louis. "The work we are doing would have struggled
to continue without this support." Formed in 1973,
NFL Charities is a nonprofit organization that enables
the league to contribute collectively to charitable
causes on a national level. NFL Charities, which has
approved more than $120 million in grants to more than
600 different organizations, approves grants annually to
support sports-related medical research, youth health
programs, and the charitable work of current and retired
NFL players.

No tampering violation found in Haynesworth signing

The NFL determined it "cannot conclude" that the Washington
Redskins committed a tampering violation before signing
defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth last offseason.
The league also said Tuesday the Redskins "assured" the
NFL that the team will "re-emphasize with club executives
the importance of abiding by the anti-tampering policy
and ensure compliance with those rules." Violation of those
rules can result in fines and forfeiting draft picks.
The league said it conducted "an extensive review" of the
Haynesworth case. His former team, the Tennessee Titans,
sent information to the NFL indicating the Redskins might
have contacted Haynesworth and his agent, Chad Speck,
before free agency began Feb. 27. Haynesworth signed a
seven-year, $100 million contract with Washington, with
$41 million in guaranteed money. Spokesmen Robbie Bohren
of the Titans and Zack Bolno of the Redskins declined to
comment on the NFL's ruling Tuesday.

Struggling Steelers will be without Kemoeatu,
Polamalu vs. Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers left guard Chris Kemoeatu will sit out
Sunday's game against Green Bay with right wrist and right
knee injuries. Coach Mike Tomlin says Kemoeatu has been
"playing one-handed" at times because of the wrist injury
and that he needs a week off to heal. Kemoeatu will be
replaced by undrafted rookie Ramon Foster. Steelers safety
Troy Polamalu will miss a fifth consecutive game with a
sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,
an injury that has been slower to heal than the team
expected. Polamalu hopes to play in the Steelers'
regular season finale Jan. 3 in Miami, but he could
miss the rest of the season.

Cardinals WR Fitzgerald to have MRI exam on right knee

Arizona star receiver Larry Fitzgerald left the Cardinals
game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night briefly
in the second half with a sprained right knee. Fitzgerald was
hurt on the third play of the third quarter when he tried to
catch a deep pass from Kurt Warner. Dashon Goldson landed on
Fitzgerald's leg and he was helped off the field. The
training staff tended to Fitzgerald on the sideline before
he was taken to the locker room. He returned to the field
with 3:23 remaining in the quarter but did not catch another
pass as the Cardinals lost 24-9. Fitzgerald finished the game
with two catches for 22 yards -- his worst performance in two
seasons. Fitzgerald is scheduled to have an MRI on his knee
Tuesday. He did not talk after the game. "When he hurt his
knee, we thought that there was a big scare, it might be
something long-term," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "But
obviously it was encouraging to see him come back. We'll
get him checked out." Fitzgerald has 85 catches for 991
yards and 10 touchdowns this season.
