*-- A Few Natural Mosquito Repellents --*

Research shows that most mosquito repellents are very harmful. They may keep mosquitoes away that carry viruses, but they can cause damage to the brain cells, can cause behavioral changes, and can have harmful side effects with some medications.

DEET is an active ingredient in brands. It has been found that 15% of the DEET chemical is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. The toxic effects of the main ingredient, diethyl-meta-toluaminde, can include reproductive disturbances, genetic material mutations, and central nervous system disorders.

There are many natural options that work just as well as the chemical filled store bought repellents!

Catnip
Researchers at Iowa State University determined that catnip can drive cats crazy but the essential oils in catnip are also a mosquito repellent!

Lotus
This plant grows naturally in water, so this would actually work better in a backyard pond. Lotus in a natural mosquito repellent and also makes your backyard beautiful!

Garlic
Believe it or not, mosquitoes don't like the smell of garlic! You can either eat a lot of it, or you can make a paste using garlic powder and water. Apply the paste to your pulse points, behind knees, on shoes and ankles, as well as cheeks or somewhere on your face. Avoid your eyes!

Plants
Certain plants are natural repellents and would help with summer nights in your backyard. Try planting Thyme, Lemongrass, Lavender, Basil, Horsemint, Citronella, or Catnip in your yard. You can also take these plant leaves and rub them directly onto your skin!

Dryer Sheets (my personal go to repellent)
Putting a dryer sheet in your pockets, in a pouch from your belt, or in a pouch around your neck helps to keep mosquitoes at bay. You can also rub them directly onto your skin. If you're going to rub them onto your skin though, use generic dryer sheets. They don't leave such a gritty feeling on your skin.

If you're going to use an over-the-counter spray, avoid anything containing DEET. Instead, try products using Picardin. It's a safer alternative. A popular item using that ingredient is Avon Skin So Soft with Picardin!
