Good morning,

Last week we talked about free, natural, chemical-free fertilizers, but maybe you don't live close to either a farm or the coast, so fertilizing your garden or lawn with either free manure or seaweed is impractical. There are other sources of fertilizer you probably have around your house that you don't even know about.

Please scroll down for some more great and environmentally friendly ideas!

* Wood ash

Do you have a wood stove or open fireplace? Spread the ashes thinly on your garden and dig in where you can. Ashes contain potassium, phosphate and other trace elements.

* Compost

Plants love compost; after all, good soil is just a mixture of minerals and naturally composted plant and animal matter. You can compost right in your backyard a ton of what you already probably throw away. Compost vegetable scraps from the kitchen, wood chips, straw, untreated paper waste, egg shells, coffee grounds and, of course, grass clippings! All it takes is a few months and a bare minimum of attention from you and then you have rich, dark, healthy compost you can dig into your garden or spread right into your lawn!
